Sorry Cate, I can't much help with that one but it sounds a great trip, I don't know the way out but the way back along the Great Ocean Road is well worth spending a few days or more to travel. Get a copy of "Camps 6" as it will help you along the way with free or low cost spots to prop. Enjoy out in the playground and,

I have Camps 6 and agree with you about the beauty of the Great Ocean Road. This one will be my third trip along the road but my first freecamping hence the call for advice.

Use your Camp6, talk to other travellers, also go to the visitor centres and enquire about campspots. In very small towns we have a couple of times found the newsagency can advise. Good luck Cate!

Hi Cate,
Last year we found that any of the road side stops east of Broken Hill are great, can't remember the names ,spring hill was one I think. We stayed in about 5 of them going back to Q'ld. All have toilets ( enviro loo) most had BBQ and covered table, some had fully fenced playgrounds unbelievable. We stopped at one big park on the left going towards East coast, we were first in and parked at the back away from road, we had 21 vans and motor homes by 4pm terrific happy hour, we stayed ther for three days and others we staying longer. Up that way they seem to cater for the traveller, IMHO only of course.
The free camps seem to have the friendliest people, like George and Dot in a motor home we had met, we leap frogged through four parks with them on that part of the trip.

Hi Cate,

We have just returned to the West a couple of weeks ago,
We stopped at many rest areas along the way, they are plentyful but,
make sure you camp as far back from the Highway as you can,
The noise of the endless parade of heavy trucks will drive you crazy.

We found that the best places to camp was where there were Gravel pits,
camping behind the piles of gravel made a great sound barrier and a restful night.

Be aware that the Yalata Roadhouse, ( situated between Camp sites 664 and 665 in the camps book )
Is closed, it was closed 4 years ago when we lasted crossed the "Sand Patch" and it's still shut,
No Food or Fuel available but, some good shade for a break.

I agree with Dreamcaster, free camp sites are a great place to meet some very friendly people,
and the information they may share regarding camp sites they know about on your trip will save you heaps.
