Mobile phone as a Modem

I am very pleased with myself, I have finally worked out how to use my mobile phone as a modem for my laptop. I am very slow to work these things out. Now I am thinking of getting rid of my land line as I never use it anyway, that will cut off my ADSL2, then get rid of my wireless broadband. I will increase my data on the mobile and I should be set. I have a Telstra Blue tick Iphone 4s so would get better coverage than my wireless broadband.

I think I am right with my thinking but I stand corrected if anyone disagrees with my thoughts.

I use Bigpond Security on my Laptop so I should still be ok in that department, I will speak with Telstra about that before I go ahead with all this.

I am using my mobile as a modem as I am doing this post.

Yes tether your phone to the laptop or tablet.

There are Telstra 4g devices which I believe are getting great spead even in the 3g only areas.

I don't have great coverage at home with wifi and I use VOIP so continue with adsl even though I pay more for adsl1 that others pay for adsl2, which is faster. Voip is still possible on a laptop or tablet or mobile phone with a softphone app but you need a good connection.

I'm currently looking into antennas and the best modem for 4g, so much to learn. I love technology.

You probably also have the option of Naked Adsl2 where you can cut off the telephone but keep the internet connection. Just something to think about.

The reason I haven't thrown out my home phone is because to make a 13; 1300 or 1800 number call on a mobile phone costs an arm and a leg. Yesterday I called Centrelink and was kept holding for nearly 30 minutes. The call cost on a mobile phone would have been over $30.00 !! I believe the Government is pushing Telcos to charge for these calls on a mobile at the same rate as a landline, but nothing has happened yet. Obviously the Telcos don't want to make the change because firstly they'll lose the revenue and secondly, people will start dropping their landlines by the thousands...

Great idea. Ihave been using my pre paid Samsung as a modern for a while now. It's working out well. Also have got rid of the landline. $50 per month gives me a couple of hours free calls and 3 gig data. Suits me.

BG,

Amaysim have a $39.90 per month unlimited calls and 4 gig internet download deal.  Plus if you get referred, you and the referrer get a $10 credit to your account. It's on the optus network. It also includes the 1300, 1800 and 13 calls I think.

We have been using Telstra mobile smart phone as a modem for a couple of years and have never had any problems with it the main advantages are that you can access Internet or emails without having to use computer and as I am doing now use it as a modem and with Telstra having the widest coverage you can get on line wherever there is mobile phone coverage, you can use it on the side of the road at free-camps and is a lot cheaper and more reliable than the ones you get a paid card for at caravan parks.

No expert here, but I think you need to be running at least Android 2.3 on the phone and you tether it. Might be different depending on the Android version.

I'm running 4.1 Jelly bean on mine and probably more intuitive than some of the older versions.

Keep the clothes on Dougwe.biggrin The line gets naked not you.lol

Rosie I've been using my mobile as a modem for a few months now - especially when on the road. Rosie you need to have a data allowance in your phone plan or it will cost you heaps. We only have 1gb/month but that's enough to check emails and this forum and do banking. On my phone I go to Settings /WiFi / tethering and portable hotspot/Portable WiFi hotspot. It drains the battery so I usually leave it plugged in while I'm working.
