Dawson River Rest Area.

Was able to catch up with the internet at Moura, bought provisions and drove 7kms to Dawson River Rest Area Camps6 #434.

A good sized area for camping with plenty of grassy sites but not along the Dawson River just the other side of the track.. There is a donation box and hot showers using a $1 coin with flushing toilets. Quite a number of caravans and campers here located on the Dawson Highway between Biloela and Emerald.

Arrived here Wednesday and not yet decided when to move on, probably tomorrow, Friday, but time will tell.

There are many holey rocks around Moura, they are perfectly round holes 28cm in diameter where they drilled to blast the overburden above the coal seam. A strong reminder of the long history of mining in this area.    JohnDawson+River+Rest+Area+001.JPG

It's not at all busy here Doug. We've just spent the afternoon chinwagging. Great to meet John here. That's the second Grey Nomad in just a few days, and no, I'm not stalking them, but John's van is so easily recognisable!

Yes the van is distinctive, we could have been parked alongside without knowing.

Good to meet up with Andy and we have plenty more time tomorrow.

Stayed an extra day to experience the Dawson River Festival and it was well worth it. Of all the various events I enjoyed the Hip Hop dancing by 4 young aboriginees they had been trained with a grant from the proceeds of a recent cyclone. On a concrete surface they could somersault in the air and do amazing twisting and twirling on the ground I was amazed at their athletic abilities. I also enjoyed the camp oven competition and spoke during the day to the eventual competition winners. Their Guiness lamb stew with damper dumplings won the competition and that was the meal that I had ordered. The cooking was done on a bed of charcoal leftover from burning logs in cut in half 44 gallon drums, then the lid was placed on the oven and filled with more of the embers. Placed on the embers at 2pm and eventually served at 7pm the result was very tender.

Had an excellent day with new friends from CMCA driving motorhomes and Andy, Plodnalong, we had a great happy hour and some homemade Gallianos went down well. The cooking competition was finished and we took off to enjoy the results.    John

Sounds like a good time was had by all John - and that description of the Guinness lamb stew has made my mouth water - shades of what we can expect at Millmerran I hope.smile
