We received a letter yesterday from MHIA ,who have insured our van for several years, saying that due to change in underwriters policy they would be unable to insure our van in future. Upon checking on their website it appears they no longer insure touring vans only motorhomes and onsite vans. Guess we need to find another insurance company.
Well that is crap Tezza!!!!! I am wondering if it is because of the increase in people getting out on the roads which has resulted in more accidents with vans hence more payouts??? I wonder how many more insurance companies will follow suit?
CIL. Will recover larger (un-towable, if that's a word), caravans Australia wide. Other big brand insures would not recover above 18 footers! Ours is 21 ' which adds up to 27' drawbar to rear bumper. As Vic said, not the cheapest, but I think that this is the reason.
CIL are great. Short version of an adventure we had - We took caravan & 4WD down a steep escarpment (gravity helped) but due to sudden unseasonal rain & lots of washouts on the escarpment police decided we were not to attempt to bring caravan back up. CIL (bless their hearts) paid SES to rescue us. So can recommend them. Anyone wants the long version of our adventure ask me when you see me.
My recommendation is that before you accept any insurance, you read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). Whilst it is important to know what is covered, the section of "What is not covered" is equally important. An example of this is that a major insurer in Australia who is the underwriter of a "seniors related insurance" does not cover "awnings" on a caravan in their PDS . Let's face it, awnings are probably the most vulernable part of your caravan in a storm. Old sayings - 'buyer beware' & 'you get what you pay for".
I have had a few vans with CIL and also NRMA, touch wood no claims but the price seems to be about the same and they both insure larger vans min is 26.5 end to end.
