Pt Augusta

G'day.  I've just travelled from Adelaide-Darwin-Adelaide and had a great trip.  The only jarring note was the Rest Stop just north of Pt Augusta.  Don't go there...the drop toilets are full and putrid. Plus there's no water.  Who should this be reported to?  Council? Health Dept?  Who is responsible for the public rest areas?  All the toilets in the NT are great, the Pt. Augusta one is the only public stop after the NT border.  Come on, SA, get it together!

i,m sorry to say that is not the case, sure that rest stop just out of Pt Augusta isn't the best but by the same token it's not the only rest stop between the port and the NT border that has toilets, I travel this road regualrly with my pilot service and have used the rest stops along the way, sure be critical if you want there's no harm in that but you also need to get all your facts right,, Pt Augusta was my home town but i am in no way defending the low maintainance of the rest stop toilet , I am just defending my home state.....Happy trails...

Have to agree with you Charlie, I'm a South Aussie and I'm sorry to say our rest area facilities are terrible.

We also did Adelaide Darwin return recently, you certainly get the message loud and clear when you cross the border into SAdisbelief

Last year when we went through there, it seemed there were hardly any toilets at rest stops in SA. Also the rest-stops where people camp were filthy because of people using the ground as a toilet.
The first rest stop in NSW coming from SA on the Barrier Highway was brilliant! Clean toilets, a BBQ, kids playground, nice shade trees. It made a huge contrast to what we'd seen before.
I think its the local councils who are responsible for cleaning up rest areas, but I shudder to think what they must think of travellers who leave such a mess behind as they go.

Actually highways dept are resonsible to clean and maintain restops on highways not councils in South Australia. Other states may be different but this is the case in SA
If a rest stop isnt on a highway then the councils

Coming down the Stuart a month ago we noticed that as soon as we hit SA there were cars dumped everywhere next to the road. Don't recall seeing a single one on the NT side of the border.

Twice I have written to the SA tourism minister, 2006 & 2010, complaining about just this problem- lack of & conditions. First reply was that they were "trying" to improve the situation. 2010 reply was much the same. One beside the Ghan in 2006 would have been enough to turn tourist off by just seeing the roadside stop as the train passed.
Many blame we "GNs" but we do not have disposeable nappies, takeaway containers, etc etc. The stop just west of the huge tanks west of Mt Augusta were the worst we have seen & most of stuff was just as I stated above.
