Obscure Thread Titles

Might be just me and I am not having a go at anyone in particular, but I wish some posters of threads would put a brief description of what the thread is about in the title.

Eg; Instead of putting "Wheels fell off" (Caravan or Tug ?) put "Caravan Wheels Fell Off" probably not a good example but you only have to read some thread titles on the forum to see what I mean, some titles give absolutely no clue as to what they are about.   Looking at a preview is still a time wasting exercise if you are in a hurry.

I do not always have a lot of time to open all threads or preview to see what they are about, and find it annoying to have to open something only to find it is something I may not be interested in or have the time to read at that point in time.

May not bother some, but I have decided from now on I am going to totally ignore threads in future that don't give the reader a clue as to what they are about.  Who cares?  Well I do.  furious

Yes, just a bit of consideration for other forum members Marj, some might think it funny putting strange titles but I find them a PITA!

Agree about the search bit too, if you're looking for a thread for "Carvan Steps" you want a search to be able to find it, you will get nothing if the title of a thread shows "Something To Step On" etc.

Regards titles, no you can't change it once it's posted unless you contact Cindy to see if she can help.

Please dear forum members, most of whom I hold in very high esteem, give us all a break! aww

Totally agree with you Vic. It has been mentioned so often on here and still they don't get it.

I had to sort Jimbo out yesterday as his heading made no sense.

There are plenty of others, they don't make sense, they say nothing about the subject and impossible to find in search. As one nomad writes on here 'I'm not a mind reader"

I've got to the stage now if I don't know what its about I won't open it anymore as like you so sick of having to open a thread to see what they are talking about only to find I am not interested anyway.

While at it. It is so easy to spread a story out. I find it impossible to read when there are no gaps, spaces or paragraphs. Some have probably noticed I go into quote and redo it myself. Just for my ease of reading but I'm sure others as well.

Thank you. I just opened a board to see several titles that read like headlines (e.g. I didn't Know This !), which anyone operating on limited battery power, paying by the megabyte for their data, or having anything else to do in life, is going to ignore. Do we have some retired newspaper sub-editors here?

The trouble is once the title has been put in the subject line, I don't think it can be changed. I might be wrong. The rest of the post can be edited but not the title is my understanding.

Have to agree with you on that moblet. Hadn't thought about that angle before. While at home as I am now I can leave the laptop connected for as long as I like. But when travelling I will only be connecting for a few minutes at a time.

I have to agree with Vic and Marj. Another PITA is when topics that are trivial and unrelated to "Grey Nomadding" appear here in the General Forum instead of in the "I Digress" forum that was set up for that purpose.

The General Forum fills up quickly as it is without being cluttered with unrelated threads.

I find it impossible to read posts without capital letters, full stops or commas...... I did a return here.... Rosie

Have to agree with some of the headings, but if this is to hard then the hints , tips & idears section is nothing short of a proper mess as there are no titles or headings . It just rambles on from start to finish & nothing can be found by search, you would have to read from start to finish so I dont even go there.

It doesn't appear that many have read this post, as since this post commenced there have been at least 3 more obscure or cryptic posts.

Not a newspaper sub-editor, but a fussy journo who mourns the demise of our language, GRAMMER and punctuation.  It's so infuriating to read the work of alleged professional writers with no punctuation and insulting spelling.

Our language is being mutilated by techology short cuts and abbreviations, so let's try to keep it intact in actual written form.

I gave up going into the Hints, tips and ideas section some time back as impossible to find anything. Have noticed its not getting used much these days.

I noticed that too. Gave me some obscure thoughts I won't mention.

Grammer's probably the right word to use when, er, weighing in on a discussion.

 Oh Dear...Glass houses?

Sometimes we use grammar as a one size fits all when we are in fact talking about syntax, the arrangement of words in a grammatical context.

Unfortunately I'm not sure that parsing and analysis of sentences are taught anymore. Not that we have to stick to rigid rules( all languages evolve) but a basic understanding of the form of our language can help in sentence construction.

Pet hate.. using "myself" in the incorrect context when 'me" or "I" is entirely appropriate.

Technology doesn't mutilate our language. People do that.

The language has always evolved, from abbreviations and contractions as we knew them to the new abbreviations that are now becoming the accepted norm.

Each new additon of a dictionary has new words that have become accepted within the language.

Lexicographically (is that a word?) yours,

Jack  biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

You will note the word "grammer" is in capitals to point out my point.

I don't expect everyone to be perfect in their literary efforts, but getting it almost right is enough.  When people write in all lower case with no punctuation, I find it hard to read.  I do expect a little effort, even if the two fingers have to work a little harder.  In fact it's sort of insulting to the reader.

My English was pretty good at school, and typing was another strong point.  So I'm a typist who uses a computer, as opposed to a computer user who can't type.

I can instruct typing which makes it much easier to use the computer keyboard.  Learn where the keys are, memorise them, and the speed will come.  It will save a bit of typing trauma.

I'm happy to accept typo's and spelling errors, as I know not everybody got this right at school and I'm glad to see them having a go anyway. I worked as a volunteer in an Adult Literacy Tutoring scheme for a few years, and have learned a lot about how difficult it can be for folk with less skills, often they wont try for fear of being laughed at. So be gentle . smile

I admit to obscure thoughts about thread titles that are deliberately tricky though. Do they want us to open those threads just to find out what its all about? Dont bother. no

Oh, and while I'm having a rant... would people PLEASE put the state or location when they mention a town ... for example there are several Donnybrooks.... ?confuse

Lighten up Christine,

I'm in no position to set myself up as the spelling police (people in glass houses etc) but I couldn't let the humorous side of a post critical of one's use of the English language containing a spelling error go past.

Surely we can have a bit of harmless fun with a spelling error or typo if it has a humorous twist to it. "Dual" and "Duel" being one such examople

Agree about spelling Jim, some of us are not too good at spelling, grammar etc, I left school at 14 before completing first year high school but do my best, also as some of us get older or are in a hurry, sometimes we put a word that seems right at the time but we see later we made a mistake.

I think the key word is try to get it right, but as long as the message gets across and people understand what you are talking about that is what counts.   I do agree that we need to be more specific with thread titles though for obvious reasons..
