Twelve months ago I shared with you all that my bone density tests were very bad and my level of osteoporosis was very serious. The doctor changed my medication, the type of calcium tabs I was taking and took me off sparkling/aerated drinks (flat wine tastes pretty good anyway) ...... WELL .......
Have just been to the doc to get the results of the bone density test I had on Friday, and..... the bone denisty in my spine has gone up by 42%!!!!!!! and in my hip by just under 6%!!! How good is that??? I am so over the moon, the doc has even said he wants to write it up for the Medical Journal, both he and I (and Peter) are absolutely staggered!
Time for a cuppa - with some milk in it!

No worries, I was on Actonel for 7 years, which worked for about 4-5 of those years then the decline started, however last year the doc changed me over to Protos. The Calcium I was on was the Calcium Carbonate (the most common form of Calcium) but I went onto Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D and Magnesium (Wagners brand) - not cheap, but obviously well worth it. I also found out that you should not take any other medication two hours either side of taking calcium pills and NO aerated drinks as the acid in them affects the calcium. Maybe if I had been told all this 8 yrs ago, I may not have been in the situation I found myself last year, but to find out the info was like trying to get blood out of a stone. All the Osteoporosis Assn. said at the time was that I was one of their younger ladies - bother, who wanted osteoporosis @ 53?? But looks like I am on the right track now, so full steam ahead!

My GP put me on Protos a few months ago too June. Got to take it at least 2 hours after food, milk, and milk products. Calcium Tablets may interfere with the absorption of Protos too, but I'm taking it instead of calcium Tabs, so that sounds a bit Double Dutch to me.
Thanks June. I found out today (would you believe) about not taking calcium closer than 2 hours from other pills! A herbalist told me about the fizzy drinks years ago, so its been flat drinks ever since! I changed to Cacium Citrate after someone here said it absorbed better. Also discovered theres a lot less side effects so am very pleased with that.
I'm starting to wonder why this info isnt more widely available? As you said.. "blood out of a stone". Osteoporosis is very expensive to the health system, you'd think there would be a greater emphasis on information and prevention.
Yep Sheba, the Protos is in powder form in a sachet that I add water to each night. My 'pill timetable' per day is: AM 6.30am -2 x Calcium Citrate before breakfast, then a Cranberry pill with breakfast (apparently that;s OK) MID 12.20pm - 1 Asimax (reflux) before lunch PM 6.30pm - 2 x Calcium Citrate before dinner NT 9.30pm - Protos So as you can see there is 'time' between each lot.
