Macquarie Heads near Strahan Tas.

Following on from the Queenstown post:-

The excitement never ends, will the van make it up the next hill and if so will it turn off when required. All of the above were answered today when driving to Strahan several large hills were encountered and after 45kms the van stopped instantly.

Strahan is a picturesque tourist destination with lots of tour options from flying boat tours to the more mundane river cruises, the latter cost $100 per person with the pensioners discount. Needless to say I had a good look round and took photos then set off towards Macquarie Heads Campground Camps6 #177 over 12kms of good dirt road. The cost is $6 per night to camp in an idyllic camping location.

There is a Coaster for sale here for $4500 but my estimate is that it would cost $1000s to get it roadworthy and present many other problems having 2 vehicles to handle in Tassie. As opposed to Melbourne where Chris, Jules son, can assist with a location, inspection and driving.         John

Was so cold this morning in Queenstown that all my fingers were numb and I couldnt open the biscuit jar, but not to worry I had no problem for afternoon tea. We are tempted to have a fish from the jetty at the change of tide but have no internet to find out when that is, the other option is at dusk but I expect to find Mrs Browns Boys on my hard drive too interesting to leave just for fishing. Now later in the afternoon Jules decided to throw in a line, it was cold so I didnt last long but Billeee caught a fish he said was an Atlantic Salmon.

An excellent end to the day, Jules got out the Camp Oven and cooked up silverside and a full complement of vegetables for a good meal. We followed up by sitting round a campfire until late reminiscing and quietly enjoying the company whilst putting a plan together for tomorrow.

You have plenty more hills and mountains to cross yet John. Gee the cost of the Gordon River Cruise has gone up since I did it but it is well worth doing, I really loved the included tour of Sarah Island and the history that goes with it, great Cruise. Port Arthur over the East Coast is another favourite.

Where's the pic of the fish?you've got to put the important things first.Last time I was at Strawn, I drove the hilux up the beach to Ocean creek, and caught some black back salmon(aust salmon, not atlantic salmon.)Lovely area, but windy and cold. Have a great time, Bill

We went on the train ride up to Queenstown and travelled back in the coach, best train ride, several stops, again around $100 but makes great memories.

The play about the ship that never was, in Strahan was well worth the $15 best show, take a jacket but a great evening and where else could there have been a ship that never was...but Tasmania

We shall all be fascinated in your continuing journey John, and how good to have such travelling companions as Julie and Billeeeeeeeeeee.

It was my turn to drive when we left Strahan, OMG the bendy road to travel to Hamilton where we were booked in for next 3 days.

I think I could happily trundle around Tassie for 6 months...then I could go down every interesting little road I wanted to.

Hi Countryroad - we are lucky to be travelling with John, he posts the best pics and info re the places we have been - John is here till the end of February, and we are here till April - so five months for us - hope to see as much as possible in that time - there is something new and different around every corner. I know what you mean about bendy roads, even worse when they are narrow as well, the Starship takes up a bit of room on the road - the hills are what get you I find.

I'm sure John has us all fascinated...if you've been before it brings back such happy memories.

You do realize we'll be expecting you to continue with the photo's. We'll be well and truely hooked by the time John leaves...need our fix.

Hope you aren't planning the Launceston to St Helen's via Scotsdale route, for me that was a scary road, we did find out later if we went via Avoca, Fingal and St Mary's would have been an easier drive, and less time, but we planned looking at map and wanting

to see as much as, looked a main road so off we went. Stayed overnight in Scotsdale, I'd never go that way again, but others might love it.
