Sounds a bit like what I do - when I don't have a house to keep clean. Roll on the next trip....early March. Better get some things ready to sew and knit.

Are you serious, Dawa? You mean you're on the road because you can't afford a house? That seems at odds with people who sell their homes for the express purpose of becoming a GN.

yes i am serious.      How many single women are out here 24/7 ?

If my income would allow me to rent a place and just do a trip here and there I would do that.

I lost my farm my home and everything with drought........came away with personal possessions only.

If you sell your home you can afford a comfortable motor home/van etc.

these poptops are very hard to live 24/7.      i have gone back to sleeping in the tent

Sorry to hear about losing your house and farm, Dawa. Bummer. I lost my house 20 years ago for a different reason. I bit off more than I could chew in business and went broke. I also lost my professional reputation, etc, and ended up on the trash heap as well as the dole. Now I'm an age pensioner. My rig - a 20 year old truck and a 40 year old slide-on camper - is all I can afford, and it's taken ages even to get this far. I'm currently living in a rented 8-room house in Taree, sharing with a married couple. But I plan to ditch this lifestyle for one on the road, 24/7. I'm not trying to compare my situation with yours, Dawa, nor am I questioning the validity of your impressions, but I sure do hope that my impressions are more favorable. Mind you, I have a different motive... I'm a writer and keen photographer, so traveling Oz is all about keeping a journal and taking lots of pics.

Living on the road is a dream for most GNs, no t"Haven't any other choice" To me thats homeless.
But in saying that it is so different for everyone. I would be permanently on the road after having given up my little unit if it wasn't for the fact I have taken on the job of carer for my 40 yr old son.
Dawa, I find it more comfortable sleeping in my van than the bed I have in the house. I sleep like a baby in the van.

Dawa you're doing well. You are making the best of a hard situation. I'm glad you've got the dogs for company now - and safety. Keep enjoying what you find in all the places you go. Do I remember you saying ages ago that you also did patchwork? I love patchwork.

I too love taking photographs and i have a journal.

I aim to live out here without moving too often and saving for a slightly bigger vehicle.

Have no need or desire to move more than once a month

I love the lifestyle and no neighbors is really great.

Yes I suppose I am homeless.  Aren't all gypsies.  Anyone who is out here 24/7  could be regarded as homeless.  Altho to me a homeless person is someone who hasn't a bed and sleeps out.    Met a lot of these in Casino

My pension is very adequate out here but paying rent and power and water etc it wasn't enough

Sleeping in the camper in winter is great but when the day temps are 45 and 47 is far too hot.

I find the tent much cooler in this summer heat.     In winter  NO WAY    I shall be snug inside.

I also think that only those who are out here 24/7 are qualified to say "how it is"  Going away for a few weeks and living permanently are very different things.

Once i have upgraded and have an inside kitchen and a table I am sure it will be easier.

I do enjoy this life tho and by staying 6-8 weeks I usualy get to know some of the locals a litttle.

Another hot day coming up and the fishing classic is underway.    Everyone who owns a boat is on the river this morning

Geez Dawa, I feel for you on those hot nights near Deni... grew up out that way and can still remember how hard it was even for a child to sleep. Best wishes to you!

That's why I am sleeping in the tent.   It cools down quicker.   Is one of those fly proof areas so i can raise the sides for air flow.

Need a bit more cash in the kick before I move northwards.      blasted rego and work on the solar cleaned me out.

but is all done now.     I have enough crafting stuff and books to keep me busy so am OK

Walking Matilda each morning and watching the boats on the river.

Homeless of course I am

What a classic pic of Billeeee's laundry day! Now that's what I call the gypsy lifestyle. And there's another thing about travelling these days... modern communications like the internet. I have friends from all over the world and it's comforting to me to know they'll be "coming with me" on the Big Lap. So I dunno about the word "homeless". I've thought about this a lot, and I honestly don't think there will be anything about my current circumstances that I'll miss on the road. Certainly not the housework! There'll be changes, of course, and adapting to a different way of life, but I'm confident there'll be more pluses than minuses. The thing I dream about most is waking up to a new view every few days or so. How therapeutic must that be!

no housework is a bonus for sure.

Looking at the maps and deciding where to go next is good.as well.

I am not doing the big lap as i am 69 and not up to the long driving in WA  so I will just potter around up and down eastern australia.

love the rivers so very much

Hello Garry, you are so right on the mark ,when you say there will be changes to your life, when you take the first step to taking to the road full time. It is so different than just heading off on a trip from your home knowing it will be there when your stint away is over. But it dosn't take long to work out what you once had is only STUFF in the end anyway. Most of us never use all the crap we gather over the years. We have not missed any of it, if any thing it kind of set us free in body and soul .We work 6 months of the year and for the other 6 months we travel to far flung places we would never have thought possible if we still owned a house. We are putting together a book at this very moment of this kind of life we have experianced. The ups and downs of it all, and the funny places and people we have come accross. So all i can say is don't wait to long to go do it.I have a motto ,,,never judge a person by what they own .

Regards Herbi '''''''' is that coffee or tea in that mug ?

Well - I love this homeless life - and by the way, that is Yeoeleven's laundry, not Billeeeeeee's - lots of good places here you can stay for ages - Demaresq Dam, near Armidale is pretty good - 9k out of town. Also Texas - great spot - you cross the Qld/NSW border when you go into town (not sure which way is which though) - homeless by choice, happy by nature, excited by meeting people and going to new places - if I don't like the view from the front door - we just move on.

Love meeting others from this forum - lovely positive people - living life as they want - meeting others, enjoying the uniquiness that is Australia!!!!!

Hi Dawa, i can only say you are a true survivor, and all the best to you in your endevour. I know a few people through no fault of there own have found them self in the situation you are in at the moment, but they done house or farm sitting and that  has helped them out no end .Just a though for you to ponder over.We are lucky that we are still young enenough to work full time when we want ,and it was our choice to go do this life style,we would not change a thing , best choice we have ever made.We think some times of when, we get to an age when we cant keep this type of life up... What Next....but at the moment that What Next can wait we have to much of this life to do .

Regards Herbie.

Tried farm sitting and really it  is more economical for me to long term camp.

I am able to save and hoping to get a little bigger vehicle in about 18mnths.     would like a stove inside for days when the weather doesn't co-operate with this lifestyle.  a table inside for those same days would be terrific.

A shower.......well that would be so fantastic but I am doing Ok with the 12V shower I have.

Sanity is what happens to other people  :)

Totally agree with you Billeeeee in everything you wrote. Has to be the most sensible post I have seen from you. lol Ouch, don't hit me.

Dawa, I had been following your blog which I found very interesting but I notice you haven't posted since last November. I am also saving up for a bigger more late model van, Myrtle won't do me forever so while I enjoy her company I am busy getting the dollars together for a new one too.

How is Matilda going now, you must be enjoying having her around. I am still working on getting a little dog, going to look at one in Childers on Monday.
