Free camps in Tassie

Hi everyone. Been checking the forum from time to time, but haven't had much to say, plus it's my busy time of the year.

However a friend and myself are taking the Kombi down to Tassie on the 2nd of April for a week. Yes, it will be a brief visit, but I was wondering if there are any reasonably priced stop-over places near Princetown and on the East coast for our return in the 7th, 8th and 9th? The Kombi is pretty much self sufficient, so a free camp if fine.

Any advice welcome and of course if there are any grey nomads in Tassie at the same time, we'd love to catch up.

Cheers,

Aime.

Princetown? doesn't seem to be on my maps here in Tassy? Is it on the north east area? There is Scottsdale North East Camp (donation - has showers for a fee as well) -
Tassy is great - you will love it!

Can't seem to find a Princetown here in Tassy - sure you don't mean Bridgetown?  Though that is down near Hobart - more details, and may be able to help - you will love Tassy!!!

Can't find a Princetown in Tassie, but there's one in Victoria.   "Princetown Recreation Reserve is 6 km east of the 12 Apostles, and adjacent to the Gellibrand River, 1 km south of Princetown on the Old Coach Road.  Princetown is on the Great Ocean Road, 19 km east of of Port Campbell."

www.princetownrecreationreserve.com

From $15.00 per site.  Power available.

No 165 in Boiling Billy's Camping Guide to Australia. [CMCA Book]

Cheers,

Sheba.

Yep - I found that one too Sheba, but it is a bit confusing - does the poster want free camp on the East Coast of Tassy or Victoria/NSW?????????

That Princetown in Vic is in the West anyway, being near Port Campbell.

Re-reading the original post, it seems as though Princetown might be the place they want to start from, when they're back on the Mainland.  That's the way I read it anyway.  Have PM'd Aime for specifics.

Cheers,

Sheba.

G'day    Hazard a guess I think they mean Queenstown and if that is the case then they must becoming down the west coast and returning via the east coast. Well done Watson and where will they camp, anywhere because most of the tourist's would have gone home and the locals would have finished their easter escapades.

Try Zeehan, Derwent bridge/ lake stclaire, Gretna, Hobart Domain, Sorrel, Spikybridge, StMary's, Scottsdale to name just a few.

cheers

Kev

Yes. Sorry everyone. I did mean Queenstown. Was planning a trip to "Princetown" in Victoria for May and it must have been on my mind. Sorry about the confusion.

Thanks for the list of sites Kev. Will Google them and see which suits the best. And yes, the plan is to visit some people at Queenstown who my friend used to fly down to see fairly regularly, but then fell on hard times and hasn't seen them for around 20 years, then onto a friends block on Mt. Lloyd. From there to see friends in Hobart and up the East coast towards the 'Spirit' for boarding late on then 9th. I've flown to Hobart, and then bussed or got a ride out to New Norfolk three times in the past 12 months so know the area well, but have never been up the East coast. Looking forward to it.

The campsites don't really have to be free, but that would be nice. We'll need a powered site somewhere at a reasonable price somewhere after Hobart to top up the deep cycle battery.

Thanks for your help,

Aime.

 Thanks Sheba. Got your PM.

By the way, due to the Princetown caravan park closing on May 2nd for the winter (same with Skene's Creek) the Princetown trip has been moved to Laanecoorie for the nights of the 10th and 11th of May leaving on Sunday the 12th. I'll be with a few Kombi people, but we're a friendly bunch and any Grey Nomads in the area at the time are welcome to join us. You won't miss my "giant fridge on wheels" which is the same one in my avatar.

Hi - if you want to stay in Queenstown - you can stay at "The Gravel Oval" - the local footy ground - just in the carpark there. Or near Derwent Bridge there is Lake King William - right on the lake - look for signs on the right side heading east that say "boat ramp" go down the second one - all sorts of little spots there, we liked it.

As for after Hobart - heading north -Kempton is a free camp with power by donation (only two plugs-but most people will share), can get a shower for $10 night - or a night at Glenorchy -Hobart Showgrounds - only $25 ($21 if you are CMCA member) - plus $1 token for showers. (This is heading up the Midland Highway) - or from the East Coast, inland is Scottsdale - North East Park - great spot - donation, and $1 for a shower - dump point and water as well. Try a Roadkill pie from the Cottage Bakery in Scottsdale - yummy - venison, rabbit and wallaby.

Have a great time.

Hopefully you will need warm clothes, but the weather in Launceston has been very hot last few months. I'll be on the Spirit to Melbourne March 31, so hopefully the weather will be getting cooler...
