Not me Gary. Never did the hippy thing, or the drug thing. Niether did my circle of friends. Our fun involved going to the beach, roller skating, the drive-in or heading down to Macleay Island for fishing and boating...never gave drugs a thought.

Anyway, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with throwing a mattress in the back and taking off, but I do object to them treating our country like a tip!

Police threat over Wicked Campers

CONTROVERSIAL van hire company Wicked Campers could face police action to remove "offensive" slogans on its vehicles after ignoring rulings by the national advertising watchdog.

The Advertising Standards Bureau is seeking police assistance in forcing the Brisbane-based company, which has 34 locations around Australia and overseas, to remove the slogans it has deemed obscene, discriminatory and derogatory in decisions dating back to 2008.

It is also pursuing the company over an internet promotion offering discounts to customers who identify as marijuana smokers.

ASB CEO Fiona Jolly said Wicked Campers, whose controversial graffitti-style painted vans have been the subject of 39 advertising complaints since 2008, was Australia's biggest serial offender when it came to ignoring the watchdog's rulings.

Ms Jolly said the company was refusing to comply with ASB decisions to remove three slogans with obscene language.

She said the company was also ignoring rulings to paint over another offensive slogan and to remove a Facebook post that were deemed degrading to women.

Wicked Campers has also so far ignored an ASB ruling to discontinue its online "Do You Smoke Weed?'' promotion, which offers discounts to customers who identify as "massive pot heads''.

Ms Jolly said she had this week written to Queensland Police Minister Jack Dempsey to seek police and government assistance in having the vans painted over.

"Wicked Campers are our one and only problem advertiser in terms of compliance,'' she said.

"Ninety-eight per cent of advertisers will withdraw their ad immediately after a board decision, in other cases if an ad is on TV or on a billboard or on radio we have an arrangement so the actual media company or network will withdraw the ad.

"But Wicked are in the very small category of an advertiser who a) doesn't want to comply and b) their marketing is their own van, so there's no broadcaster or publisher that can help.''

A spokesperson for Minister Dempsey declined to comment on the issue.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said the van slogans might constitute a public nuisance offence under state laws, and it would consider any complaint made "on its merits''.

Wicked Campers spokesperson Ross Dudgeon, who gave his official title as "junior executive vice president of awesomeness'', declined to comment.

In the last five years the ASB has successfully requested the removal of 13 offensive slogans from the Wicked Campers fleet.

I would say most "Wicked Camper" hire travellers would "very rarely" have a baby in nappies, travelling with them.

So all those nappies on the ground in Rest areas must be from all the other "overseas" tourists in the Maui and Kea type campers. Australians would not litter Rest areas like that would they ?

Just last weekend coming back from Busselton to Perth pulled in for a morning coffee in a nice off road tree lined rest area.

The experience ruined by Nappies left on the roadway , Five Litre Oil Drums (empty and two new with others older lying around) 12v Batteries, Tyres, Beer and Soft drink cans, Toilet paper thoughout the bush on the Verge.

I would not blame all this rubbish on Campers, Caravanners, either. I have seen a big truck pull away leaving an area dumped with the ashtray contents, empty drink cans, Paper wrappers. He had a rest stop and cleaned the Cab out.

We have camped by, and met heaps of travellers in Wicked Vans and other Hire type campers. Cant say I ever could complain about the camp when they left. All nice, polite, interesting, young men and women from all over the world.

But I have camped by some pigs, with Australian accents of all ages, who could not give a (!@#$t) about anyone else or how they treat the country.

Luckily it is a minority who cause this litter problem but it impacts on us all.

I agree Beth, it's not who they are, what they smoke, or how they live....I get turned off by anyone who treats anyplace like a dump, no matter who they are.

I was born in the 60's but I loved my hot pants...ha ha ah

Cripes, talking about way back when I was 18 , I can remember having a Mohawk haircut for a bet (won twenty quid), you know the one that looks like a broom head sticking up in the middle of an otherwise bald head........boss at work wasn't too thrilled.

Recently in two separate supermarkets I have seen two staff members sporting one, must be coming back in style!

Mine was like the first one on this link but with the sides shaven.....

Once a year in Oz we have Clean Up Australia Day. The reason it happens every year is because people keep making a mess. All kinds of people, not just campers and travellers. I was at the mouth of the Manning River one time, in a small parking area near Old Bar. There was an old bloke picking up papers, cans and other rubbish and putting them in a big bag. At first I thought he was a council employee or something, but no. He was a local, and explained to me that he comes down to the area often to clean up and keep it looking decent. I guess he figures complaining about it won't make it go away. I don't think people who make a mess will ever go away either. We can call them every name in the book and bitch about them till the cows come home but it will never make any difference. The only way to make a difference is to follow the example of that old bloke.

Have met quite a few backpackers on our travels, some in Wicked campers, some in vans, some on bikes, some walking - mostly interesting, fun people, and you have to give them a tick for their gameness - they travel all over this country - often not even speaking good English - but good on them - and we must remember too, that our young ones are travelling overseas - and we hope they are treated well over there.

I have found the most messes in roadside stops etc., are made by "weekend warriors" - usually in cars, they stop at a fast food joint, load up and then just dump the rubbish. Change babies nappies, etc and leave their rubbish all over the place. Most travellers, caravanners, backpackers etc., carry rubbish in plastic bags and dispose of it properly. Of course there are execptions to this rule.

As for the "Wicked" van drivers being "doped up hippies" - what a generalisation!!!!!!!!! That is all I will say on the subject, apart from this - how many of you take medication, for pain or whatever, with the instructions "may cause drowsiness, do not drive motor vehicles while taking this medication" - and promptly go out and drive the highways and byways of this country?????

All back packers are grubs ,do not think anyone on here is saying that, Our thoughts on the mess around our country left by people is not just at camp spots ,, just go to a local park or drive around your own suburb to see the rubbish .I am going to flack over this comment but we find the truck drivers are some of the worst affenders at rest spots around this country...The tyers just left around is staggering ,we counted 22 in the grass at a rest stop just out of Dubbo, the other thing that gets up my nose is R/Vs are supposed to have all this leave no trace thingo (fair enough ) but these trucks do not have on board any type of toilet, the only thing they carry is a roll of toilet paper then we all know where that ends up.The other problem is the councils that look after the designated area just put 44gal drums out inthese places and only empty in some cases once per month,but in some places they are full with in a couple of days.It would be a lot cheaper to put those big industrial green bins in these places.As for the nappy thingo Yes it is a terrible mess, the idea is we do not want the mess with us we will leave it here for the next person to look/ smell it.

I don't think anyone mentioned those with wicked campers were responsible for the baby nappies, I certainly didn't.

I would agree that car travellers are not the only ones responsible. From the closeness to the rest stops I would say a lot of the mess and "droppings" are done under the cover of darkness, otherwise the perpetrators would be seen by others.

Thanks Gerty but he dissapeared at about 8mths old so I ended up with a long haired german shephard instead

I hate to say it but I think I'd prefer the youth to smoke Marajuana than drink alcohol. Drink causes violence, anger, vanderlism and many other antisocial behaviours. Marijuana causes lethargy and a lack of motivation so at least it doesn't bother other people in the way alcohol does.

I'm not going into the health side of either as they can both have detrimental effects to ones health in the long run.

I have to agree there. The dope smokers can be seen travelling to the nearest fast food outlet at 40 kph, scared out of their wits and just let the wrappers pile up in their car !!!

My elderly MUM had to go for #1 near the Gloucester Tree, in Pemberton. Not a soul around until the tourist coach pulled up next to her !!!

Weird...the 'quote' button didn't happen so I had to do it this way.

Anyway, you are correct Gerty, that's exactly what the original article said. I didn't mean for this to turn into a debate about marijuana, but as Gerty said, it is illegal, therefore should not be allowed to be advertised on the vans.

As for it 'not bothering other people the way alcohol does', I beg to differ. Even though I don't mix with people who use it, two young people I know have been left brain damaged from using it in their teens. It's been a huge tragedy for their families.

And it does bother me as much as excess alcohol does.
