Looking for help....we are travelling from Broome to Adelaide in September and wondered if anyone could recommend good campsites, free or paid! Also anything we should not miss on our travels?
Was going to stop at Halls Creek but have been warned off there!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Jean
Don't be put off by Halls Creek Jean, yes they have a local problem at night but if you are staying in the caravan park you won't have a problem, there is another small caravan park out at old Halls Creek, worth a drive out even though it is (or was) not sealed, wouldn't take my van out though, leave that at the CP in town. Go to the Tourist Bureau at Halls Creek for info and also a photo of Russian Jack with his wheelbarrow with his mate in it, enquire about the history. On the way out to Old Halls Creek (nice spot for a picnic, they did have a small store at the CP out there too) stop and view China Wall (a natural quarts wall) and visit Caroline Pool on the way out too, we got a photo of a ghost in our photo when we were there, a man and a woman in bridal gear (eg; he in tux, she in brides gown), not sure if we still have it. To miss Halls creek would be a tragedy......if you are just travelling through and only stopping for fuel, for a couple of dollars you can get a key for the shower at the Servo if you so wish, if things haven't changed. DON'T BE AFRAID OF HALLS CREEK....just don't go out at night, especially on pension day.......
Plenty of free camps across the top, just use your Camps 7 book, make your phone calls or internet close to or in town as not any coverage in most of the free camps....Don't forget Tunnel Creek, Winjana Gorge (go in from Derby end) can leave your caravan at Derby CP or take a 4WD tour....Geike Gorge at Fitzroy Crossing is a must , see tourist bureau in both towns...
Are you taking your campervan or caravan Jean?????

How long is the trip going to take,as that can make a lot of difference to where one stops and what to go see.Another thing is what are you driving and are you pulling a van or camper trailer,as some places along the way that i may suggest to go see , you may not be able to go due to your mode of transport, and time frame.
Thats a long way to travel in 3 weeks scotia!! A nice free camp about 20k's out of tennant Creek is "The Pebbles". It is a little sister to the "Devils Marbles", which is also a good camp further south. theres 6 k's of dirt road to The Pebbles, but it was good when we were there. The Devils Marbles is a great campground, but can be very busy.
Another spot along the Stuart highway is Barrow Creek... we definely do not recommend this one!

Herbie, We are travelling in our 4WD with a rooftop tend but my sister and hubby who will be here from Scotland will be hiring a campervan in Broome, they like the idea of having a shower on hand! We will be leaving Broome on 16th September and have to be in Adelaide for 8th October when my sister flys back home. So just about three weeks for travel. I am open to any suggestions then I can make up some sort of itinerary for our trip.
Vic. I must admit I was a bit scared of stopping at Halls Creek, I have heard so many different comments about the place, but after what you have said I think we will definately have a look at least! your photo sounds great I hope you can find it, if you do you will have to post it on here! I love anything like that. I've had a very quick look at your link and it looks great, just what I need, I will have a good read of it later. thanks. :)
I guess it is long enough if you only want to have a quick look at a few places, i kind of forget that all people are not like our self and take our time and try to see as much as we can while in that area.As we do not like going back to the same destination over and over again.Bad enough travelling to one state to the other re our work.As in that case one cannot help but do that . Like travelling acrossing from the eastern states to the western states .We have just about taken every road there is .

In three weeks you will not have time to really go out of your way to see very much. Are you heading back up that way after you see your sister off,If so maybe you will have time then.

Well worth the visit Jean, very quiet and safe during the day, and only the odd flare up at night.....
I think I might have lost the photo in a pc change over years ago, looked but can't find it now
