Hi zagg and welcome to the forum, my nephew has just recently purchased a Nissan Pathfinder Diesel to tow his 28 foot van and did quite a bit of research prior to buying it he tells me that it has a 3 ton tow capability. Purchase of a tug also depends very much on personal requirements as in our case we chose a Pajero Exceed for the seating support and comfort ( we both have back issues) as it exceeded anything else we tried for comfort and they have the reputation of being a good tug.

You could also have a look at the Nissan forum as they will have info there

Hi,
We have a Nissan Pathfinder 3 years old that we use to tow our Jayco 23.72.1 van with slideout. We average around 14l's per 100 k's towing at around 90-95 kmh. To date we have done 55,000 k,s with around 20,000 k's towing. Quite comfortable and apart from the auto-up on the driver's side window having failed for the second time we have had no problems. Still on original tyres. The Jayco loaded up for the last trip went 2790 kg on the local weighbridge.

Yes and No.
I have a 2.5 turbo deisel Pathfinder 2009 model. When I first got it the fuel consumption was high and pulling off was a nightmare. Don't get me wrong, it will do the job but you have to put the pedal to the floor and listen to the turbo screeming to get the caravan moving. We tow two and a half tonnes and the consumption was anywhere between 15-20 l/100.
Now if you fit a chip and modify the exhaust you've got a totally different vehicle. Towing now between 11 and 12 l/100 (this can go up with a headwind) and the pulling power is incredible.
A very stable tug. The only other mod to consider is balloons in the rear suspension to prevent tyre wear.

Of course, if you are considering a Pathfinder 550 then this question wouldn't even arise!

If you're buying secondhand get the clutch checked.

zagg,

There are some very knowledgeable technical details people on here (hats off to them too!) and it might be useful to start off asking what you should be asking.

For instance, it is a bit more than what it can tow. When there is a laden weight of 2500 or 3000kg on the back what weight can be carried legally inside the new Pathfinders?

I sense we are looking forward to spot checks by Dept of Transport in the near future. For that reason alone it is useful sorting the limits of what you are thinking about up-front.
