@Chrisandchris: I've been using a Huawei X1 for about a year as a 3G/HSDPA mobile phone, internet device and modem. It cost $79 and, at the time, it was part of a $50+ data/voice package. Nowdays, I use an Optus reseller for connectivity.....no real issues to report IMHO

Anyway there are, nowdays, LOTS of options re using a mobile/ 'smartphone' as a modem, either through bluetooth or wifi wireless connectivity. There are also LOTS of issues regarding mobile signal strength, duality of purpose (ie phone AND modem at the same time), battery life and ease-of-use that you may wish to consider PRIOR to your purchase.

I have just started to use my LG smart phone as a modem and it seems to be just as good as the USB modem and will mean one less unit to pay for.
I am using USB tethering rather than bluetooth or Wi Fi and just buy a data package when needed.
Cheers
David
