Its certainly rough, but it cuts 100s of klm off if you want to go to the Kimberleys, without going the Katherine.I didn,t find it as bad as the Gibb river road, and the worst one was the road to Cape Leveque.150klmsof really bad dirt, then you get onto good bitcumen in the middle of nowhere! My sister just did the Gunbarrel. I will try to get some pics off her. Bill

I am with you on condition of road conditions on the Tanami  maybe we were lucky as it looked like it had not long been graded when we travelled through, the Gunbarrel  was not too bad either.Worst road we have travelled on is the road out to Steep Point in WA.The most magic location and the most western point in OZ.It is part of the Shark Bay/ Monkey Mia/ Denham area WA.Google in Steep Point and you will see what I am saying regarding what a magic place it is, if you can get into it with out wrecking your vehicle.DO NOT TAKE YOUR VAN Along This Goat track ,it is a danger really to use. As if you do run into a problem there is no phn service of any kind along this road.
