Balgal Beach north of Townsville

Arrived at Balgal Beach Camps6 #37 early on Monday morning to coincide with an anticipated evacuation prior to the ranger's visit. Last year I was not so careful and missed out on this great camp site. Excellent facilities including a dump spot, flushing toilets, fresh water and free barbeques. Right on the beach and estuary this is a beautiful camp, note the view from my site right on the beach gardens. How about this place, free camping in these idyllic surroundings.

Chris and Roz have also found a spot here, we first met at Bluewater and subsequently camped at Toomulla. As usual I will update this post as and when something of note happens, one of the first things will be fish and chips at the kiosk after having been told by so many campers how good they are and how rarely I buy outside fast food outlets.     John

Got carried away and put a pic in twice. hence the edit.

Balgal Beach campers 'ruin view' when overstaying | Townsville ...

Hope the thoughtless selfish campers don't get this spot closed, I recon enjoy them while you can John as in not so very long they all will be closed.

The only free camping will be in the back of beyond.

There is two free camps here John as I guess you already know not far from each other they call them Balgal Beach 1 and Balgal Beach 2 both 48hrs so if you move unto the next one after 48hrs it kind of gives you 96hrs.

Hi John.

I can vouch for the fish & chips. Had them a few times and always get heaps of chips.

Were there many camp spots there when you arrived as I know that when I have been there you can hardly walk between the caravans?

Watch out for the little biting creatures at night.

When we were there last both camps were for caravans/ motor/homes no tents were allowed if it is the free camp I am talking about.

The other camp we have stayed at is called funny dunny (it used to be free but now because of people over staying and the mess they were leaving it is or was $5 per night.Funny Dunny is also close to the beach it is about half way between Townsville and Bowen.

Up Date ...maybe it wont be open for long either as wife just told me the locals are sick of the mess getting left there and propping up peoples holidays .,so a metting is going to be held between council and rate payers.

Last time we were there you could stay 4 days out of every two week period.

Hi Chris, there is little space here at Balgal so as you say it is crowded, small price to pay for this beautiful place.

Bought some personal insect repellent and have a mosquito coil going just in case.

Hi Herbie, don't know the other camp but would like to. I know about Bushy Parker which is nearby.

On the esplanade near the boat ramp and shop, I have accessed WikiCamps and found a tent only site further south will have a walk there tomorrow and investigate that could be the other site mentioned.

Would love to be there John, looks a great site. Will get there in a month or so. You will have moved on by then but our paths will surely cross somewhere.
Love the tool box on the back of the coaster. The same as I want on the front behind my bulbar but of course smaller and maybe longer. Have to get prices as will probably have to get it made to fit.

Funny Dunny Camp is at Wunjunga. You turn off sth of Inkerman , and travel about 10 klms on good dirt . The Burdiken shire council has taken control as people were abusing in locals and facilities.you can stay 2days a week, and its just behind the beach. the fishing is good , but a 4wd is recommended if you want to get to the best spots. Drop toiletsand tank water, so bring your own water.Sandflies can be bad at times.Another good spot is Wallaces landing. You turn off at Inkerman, and its 5 or 6 klms down the road. Toilets, no other facilities. Great crabbing. Bill

Last year went fishing with brother inlaw who lives at South Mission Beach,so he kind of knows the area better than me,we went and camped at a few different places ,..Barramundi (Morris )Creek boat ramp camping ground.Access end of Morris Creek Rd Gira .Free camping Basic facilities.

Cromarly Boat Ramp Basic facilities eco toilet,Access at end of Cromarty Creek boat ramp road off Donagher street Girue .

We had a night in this one driving up this time would have loved to have stayed longer, but will linger a little longer another time

cannot remember if it had a name so will attempt to describe how to get there On Silkwood road -Japoonvale road on south side-east side on bridge over Liverpool creek inland of Bruce h/way about 28ks south west of Inisfail.

Hope these few camps help you out as they were all free of changes last time we visited. They are spread out but if you are wondering up and down the Bruce time I guess is not that important.

Thanks Herbie,

I am heading north so the ones below Townsville will have to wait for next year, intend to move inland and go south away from the coast.

I think that the one you mentioned on Silkwood Road is the one I stopped at before going to Paronella Park last year, it was called Upper Liverpool Creek and nominated day in camps Camps6 #20 but several stopped overnight.

Hi John.

I tried to get into Upper Liverpool Creek recently and it was full of mainly motor homes etc. because of the Christmas in July CMCA rally in Mareeba. I drove another few ks up the road towards Paronella and found a camp with showers and flushing toilets so I stayed there for 2 nights.

I can recommend the fish and chips at the Fisherman's Landing, had a quiet couple of days. Took a long walk on the beach down to the next promontory, there is another camp site on Balgal Beach listed in WikiCamps nominated for tents only but I couldn't find it, asked a council workman who said it may be near the Community Hall. I propose to visit the Community Hall on Thursday enroute to Bushy Parker Park because it houses an opp shop and there are a few things that I may find there.

The first time that I have had to use the generator since installing the new solar panels is here at Balgal and the reason is that the only spot I could get was partially shaded with sheoaks. Another sunny day has arrived as the new photos attest, the first from the front of the bus and towards the beach. Taken at 6.15am John

Hi John, the other camp at Balgal Beach you access it from via Ocean Drive in Balgal.

Maybe it has closed now but it was a beaut spot.

Another spot is Winfield park camp ground just off Malanda-Lake Barrine Rd about 3ks north/east of Malanda.

Started getting ready for leaving tomorrow by taking down the awning and generally tidying up. Had another good day with  2 couples one with a guitar and a good voice then we had a fivesome over at the Fisherman's Landing for tea. Needed the generator again the regulator showing 12 volts at 4pm with the night's fridge to go.

OOPS just realized that I have a problem accessing the spare wheel with the new box on the back, need to fit a crank handle below the tow bar. Found out that if I empty the box it is not too heavy for me to take off the tracks and sit it on the ground. Better to solve that now than when I have to change a wheel, will be stressed enough without realizing the problem when trying to get at the spare wheel.    John
