NO, it is NOT the same standard as the Amp-fibian.
Yes, the Powertech does comply with AS/NZS 3190:2011 as shown on that certificate ................... BUT it DOES NOT comply with AS/NZS 3001:2008/Amdt 1:2012 Electrical Installations Portable structures and vehicles including their site supplies. Compliance with AS/NZS 3001:2008/Amdt 1:2012 is REQUIRED to make it legal to use with a caravan, camper trailer or motorhome.
Can I make it any clearer: the Powertech unit <<< IS NOT APPROVED >>> for use with a caravan, camper trailer or motorhome FULL STOP.
Ignore this at your own peril !!!
Bottom line (for me)... I need something to help me connect to the van to my household electrics, and the Powertech will do that. It does comply with the AS/NZS standards relevant to the purpose for which I want to use it.
It is sold in many caravan / motor home outlets as "fit for purpose" and the ACCC has not intervened (to anyone's knowledge).
It is legally sold in this country. It is legally used it this country. There are no restriction on its use except that it is not suited for "outdoor" use.
I have no need or intention to use it "outdoors" or leave it in the rain etc.
I prefer to use the Powertech as opposed to some dodgy power cable with home modified plugs, which are not legal.
It may not be the same as the amphibian, but it suits my need.
<< Hmmm, yup I did dougwe, bought my little orange thingie and all good >>
The problem is that if your little orange thingie is a Powertech unit it is only all good if you use it indoors. If it is an Amp Fibian then all is good.
This is no can of worms it is a discussion of fact versus incorrect information that could save a life. If adults cannot discuss that then what is the purpose of the forum.
There has been no nastiness only a few trying to convince the rest that safety is worth the expense. If the rest that did not understand the difference between a non conforming product and a conforming one they may now understand it better and if they need to connect 10 amp to 15 amp go out and buy an Amp Fibian.
If that happens then I am pleased and I thank you for starting the topic.
Sorry if I gave the impression that I was tech savy.
I am just worried about members safety.
I have no idea how the things work. I am happy to be advised by a qualified person that something complies with safety or it does not .
I like everyone else on this forum hope to learn a lot as I go along
Cheers

Hi Liddle not a worry.I realised that the powertech was not to be used out doors but still thought you could use it at home to power the van as long as the unit was inside. Why I asked was you stated it not to be used on vans etc even though it met the same standard as the other one except the issue of water proofing.
Cheers Yendorane

My answer was not written with any reference to your post . I was referring generally to the topic.

I believe that the Powertech is complying to a different standard. As I have said I am not a technical person.
The important thing is that you have taken as much care as you can and treat the 240 volts with respect. I am sure that if you do you will have no problems.
By the way this topic has been thrashed out on most motorhome/caravan forums with much the same result ,ie. There are very strict rules that are not always enforced and the majority are happy to know to take extra care with 240v.It is easy for the handyman type to get carried away because the strict rules do not apply to 12v or 24v and they carry this over to 240v which can be dangerous.
I hope you feel satisfied that you now have a good setup for your van
