Upper Swan bushfire ; threatening lives as strong winds fan blaze
The blaze started last night, but is now being fanned by strong winds and is heading towards homes in the city of Swan. W.A.
An emergency level alert has been issued for the fire.
About 120 firefighters are at the scene of the blaze, which is threatening properties on Copley and St Albans roads and Coondaree Parade.
The area is home to hobby and equestrian farms and residents are being warned to leave immediately if possible.
Firefighters said the bushfire was moving fast in a westerly direction with flames up to six metres high and that burning embers were starting spot fires up to 150 metres ahead of the blaze.
DFES spokesman Alan Gale said a favourable wind change at day break was now helping firefighters.
"A lot of the smoke has dissipated already," he said.
"So those winds have gone from that south-westerly and swung back more around to an easterly at the moment, which is pushing it back on itself, which is good news.
"The threat is not over yet because with these sorts of winds it will start moving out to a new front on the opposite side of the fire, but the risk certainly has been reduced."
He said forecast hot weather was of concern, with Perth expecting 35 degrees today.
A resident on Coondaree Parade said he had been up all night battling the fires and had packed the family's dogs in the back of his truck, ready to flee if necessary.
Weather conditions are forecast to deteriorate this afternoon with a westerly wind change expected to threaten homes in Brigadoon's Avon Ridge estate.
An emergency level alert has been issued for the firein an area bounded by the Great Northern Highway, Walyunga Road and the Swan River.
"[People] in that area should put their bushfire action plan in place, and if they're not prepared to stay and defend their property, then they should leave now."
