I like to buy the mixed salad leaves in a bag. Generally they go slimy and smelly in a couple of days, however, if you put them in a plastic container with good lid it should last for a week or more. I also have a long narrow plastic container for my celery and spring onion, bits of capsicum and they all stay nice and crisp for much longer than if they are just in a bag or on the shelf in the fridge. Biscuits sweet or savoury will also stay crisper for longer in a sealer plastic box in the fridge... Can you tell I have a bit of a fetish for plastic containers....!!!
I agree, Hoodathunkit, I used those zip-lock bags for everything for a while in an effort to save space. But salads really do keep better when in a plastic container. My freezer in the van is pretty small, still use zip-lock bags there.
My mother has always used a piece of paper towel on top of her celery in the plastic container, to absorb the moisture they generate. It seems to work well. She's done it for years.
Have always wrapped all fruit and vegies in newspaper. I grew up with once a month shopping and no freezer and that is how we survived then and I still do now. We could get bread on the mail run twice a week but was a bit dry after 6 hours being driven around. A bit of water splashed over the bread in in the oven freshed it up pretty good.Either that or have toast.
the secret is to line the plastic container with a paper towel making sure none of the leaves touch the actual container - - place another towel on top and close - don't over pack the salad in, it will last for close to 2 weeks, same with mushrooms - line the container wit a paper towel - slice the mushrooms in to 3 and layer in the container - with a paper towel between each layer of mushrooms- top with a paper towel then place the lid on - these will keep fresh for close to 3 weeks this way
