I always have my dogs confined to a yard, a carrier or on a lead for their own safety. I think most camp grounds ban animals around where people eat as do most motorhome, caravan clubs.

An animal lying beside it's owner behaving wouldn't offend me but I sense this may not have been the case.

No more to it Janette, simply thinking of those that are offended by the thoughtlessness of others. Strange as it may seem there are many travellers that do not like dogs or cats.

Like Janette, we keep our dogs on a lead and under control.

We don't take our dogs into communal kitchens or amenities, that's basic hygiene. However, as companion animals, dogs are happiest with their "pack" - us, and will stress if left alone, tied up or confined.

We work hard to train and control the dogs, and to minimise their impact on the environment. They are obedient, vaccinated, flea free, never leash free, and we pick up after them religiously. We restrict where we camp, excluded from National parks and a growing % of Tourist parks.

Personally, I don't care if you don't like my dogs.

If they annoy people simply by "being there" I think you need to make happy hour elsewhere.

I probably would like your dogs (have seen very few in the past sixty years, including the hundreds that I've hunted with in that time that I didn't like) but I can almost guarantee that a hard arsed attitude such as yours would engender an almost immediate dislike of you Ripand Rosie.

As there are many people that don't like other travellers. That's why I sold up so I could move when I didn't like the neighbours. There are many of us out there with pets, us with a big dog (Wolfhound/Rhodesian Ridgeback) that is well behaved but we seemed to be lumped with the others that do the wrong thing, because we have a big dog, not an ankle bitter or lap dog. Do what we do, say something or move! Big country.

Quite right, not all people like animals(other than human animals).

Lucky for me I have never in all my years met someone who doesn't like animals that I would want to spend any time with.

My dogs are Always more honest and reliable than humans, and better company than most!

And if you can't handle that then like someone else said, take a spoonful of cement and harden up!

Well said Rosie. My dog is my best mate and if she isn't welcome then I don't want to be there either. Also many caravan parks have rules about leaving pets unattended in vans or at your campsite.

I love my dog but I completely understand if others don't. I wouldn't dream of intruding on others without asking, and I wouldn't bring my dog to your house, and certainly not to your dinner table. If you are the sort of dog owner who expects others to eat in the company of your little darling, then you and your dog(s) should eat alone.

Some time ago I brought my dog to an outdoor cafe and was in the process of attaching her lead to some plumbing when I noticed one of the patrons glaring at me. Instead of resenting him for it, I took the hint and went elsewhere, and I've never done the same thing again.

Don't times change. Saw on Tv, The Great South East (Qld.) program cafes that specifically cater for dogs and their owners on the sidewalk. They provide water and tie-up points or cages. Some big dogs there too.

I've seen cafes in some inner suburbs of Sydney that have bowls of water out for dogs who are welcome in the outside areas

The problem with threads like this is the dog owners with manners and consideration get their noses out of joint when the thread is not aimed at them. The dog owners who the thread is aimed at, couldn't give a stuff and will continue their inconsiderate behaviour regardless.

Same with smokers, (I was a very heavy smoker and guilty of this) they also have very little consideration for others. They may smoke away fro others but their breathe and their clothes reek of stale tobacco. They will stand around a fire and flick their butt towards the fire but not in it. Go to the now dead fire place the next morning and there will always be butts. Height of ignorance but those not meant to be offended are and those meant to take a hint won't.

I have enjoyed this forum, and will continue to observe it.

While I sit by myself In the corner, with my 2 large dogs and a cigarette.

I generally don't smoke out of my camp, unless folk say it's ok.

And if my dogs aren't welcome, I don't go.

This forum has taught me a few things.

Travel alone and don't mix with people. Therefore I can't piss anyone off, can I?

Happy New Year to the grey nomad whingers!!!!

PS Oh, and it just so happened I spent Christmas Day at Banff, Canada. so many dogs in the hotel, from German shepherds, to bull mastiffs to handbag dogs. They were allowed everywhere, bars, shops etc within the hotel.

No one complained.

I' m sorry you feel that way because of one or two insensitive remarks. Nowhere did I see them aimed at your dogs. Will be pleased to catch up with you again out there somewhere sometime.

As I said, those who comments aren't aimed at take offence and get tetchy, those who the comments ARE aimed at aren't on the forum and couldn't give a stuff anyway. If you are offended, the comments are obviously NOT aimed at you, if you aren't offended, maybe you should be.

I've read post after post of'for and against' animals.We have a Jack Russell. We were parked in a van park least week. One night unwelcome visitors came and stole a couple of bicycles and were about to remove a kayak when our dog let out a warning bark. He was the star of the park, the thieves got away on the bikes but didn't get anything else. Cuzzie (our dog) sleeps outside in his kennel. He received many gifts of food with our permission of course. He is generally very quiet. Dogs aren't all yappy and a nuisance. Give over will you, dislikers.

Couldn't agree more Val n Rob. We have/had a dog, a Border Collie called Kip. Would have loved to have him with us but lack of space precludes it. He is very happy at our daughters place with our 8 & 5 year old grandsons. I would love a Jack Russell. Believe that they are a German Shepherd in nature but their size lets them down Trainable, loyal and loving. One day and then I can join the hordes of the hated. Still don't like smokers though.

Bunkerbob, Rob and I are ex smokers. It wasn't until we gave up did we realize the smell of cig smoke and the damage smoking causes. It is my only regret in my life.

So am I. Gave up in October 2001 and then had a massive heart attack in March 2002 that the doctor said was probably bought on by giving up smoking. Don't quite know how that works but I survived. And, yes, it is not until you give up that you realise how much smokers and smoking smells. Smokers don't realise it but even passing through a smoke cloud gets onto your clothes and hair, what is left of it.. Don't have regrets cause your past makes up who you are today. But having been a smoker you can understand what Nonsmokers put up with.

This thread started out about people taking their pets to happy hours......and as much as I love my 2 Whippets I would not drea of joining an already established happy hour with my dogs or at least certainly not without asking people first.....at times it has been evident that my boys would not be welcome (for a variety of reasons) in which case I may stay for a chat and perhaps share some munchies etc and then return to myown mh, at other times I am enthusiatically asked to bring the boys along....so in every instance 'play it by ear' see what the go is.
What I am not so keen on is people who allow their dogs to runaround all over a camp off leash, often emptying out right by your door....or putting the fear of dog into your own dog.....
I treat camps as 'on lead' parks, clear up and boys on leash until I get right out of camp, if there is a safe place to then allow the boys to take a free run whilst I am watching carefully.
