New Year at Greens

It is now Wednesday morning 1st January 2014 and we had an interesting day yesterday. Spent time in a group during the afternoon and early evening and I for one had some dinner (3 plums in brandy custard) pathetic it was but couldnt be bothered with food preparation. Then had a sleep for an hour or so getting ready to party on until midnight. The general plan was to kick on at around 9pm so I slept till 8.55, am good at that can sleep to order and waken refreshed at any pre determined time.

So we sat around talking and some didnt last the distance and the ring got smaller. I had prepared the fire so that it was ready if needed and it was lit to give atmosphere as well as warmth, kept the wood up until around 11 and let it reduce so that at midnight it was down to hot coals and one well burnt log. From midnight a total fire ban had been proclaimed so a container of water was produced and the remnants were extinguished. I had put the rest of my alcohol out for general consumption hoping that it would be drunk, will go across later to see if any remained

The camp overall was not excessively noisy but there was one incident that caused alarm, several teens carried one of their friends up to the toilet area and had to call for assistance. Paramedics were on hand but the ambulance was called and he was whisked off, apparently there was an altercation and he had been glassed with a bottle in a dispute between groups from different towns. Some fireworks were let off and we were the noisest group in the campground after Sandra produced those blow out whistles.

Cuddles and kisses all round whilst the hardy souls who stayed up until the new year celebrated. All up a great way to finish the old year and greet the new one, tentative plans were made to be here at Greens next year to repeat the process. My plans are to go to the Elvis Festival then get my battery situation sorted and head off north via the Gold Coast and Gympie, go to Townsville again then Babinda before heading across to Tenant Creek to explore down the middle. See more of South Australia and Victoria ending up here at Greens again in October.               John

A good night was had by all our group - lots of mess to clean up this morning, though. Empty bottles, general rubbish etc - the skip bins are all overflowing!!

This alcohol fueled violence is a bit of a worry. It happens on the streets of cities and towns and now it seems at camping sites as well! Some poor young bloke in WA was stabbed to death with a machete at beach camp. Crazy, crazy, crazy.

If that was true Daryl I don't blame the lady one bit. More than likely locals and not grey nomads but the GN's will get the blame. The locals don't seem to appreciate what hey have there at Greens Lake.

While it is true there was a lot of mess left at Greens Lake after NYE, it was pretty ok really - have seen a lot worse - as far as we know there was only the one incident which is reported in the Bendigo Advertiser - the rest of the night was young people having fun - they are loud, they swear, they make a mess!!

Most of the rubbish was put in the skip bins provided, and after the "young ones" had left, most campers picked up what was left around the area. I must say that it wasn't all young ones - some of the older generation don't set a good example either - urinating in public, not 50m from a toilet, empty cans and bags of rubbish left where they camp, not just on NYE but nearly every weekend a mess has to be cleaned up.

As to the couch and chair - all I can say is they must have more money than sense!

Grey Nomads who camp at Greens Lake on a regular basis, know that to keep in open, we need to keep it relatively clean and tidy, which we do, by picking up rubbish left laying around - not a big deal at all.

These are my thoughts on the matter.

Too true Daryl - besides the resident Wombat (not OUR Wombat) now has a well set up lounge room from a gazebo he rescued from the skip bin, as well as two lounge chairs that were left behind - one man's rubbish, anothers treasure!!!
