Open Heart Surgery- aortic valve and root replacement.

Hi all,

I have been lurking but not posted for a while.

I am currently in Day 8 out of an Aortic valve and root replacement.

I am sure there are many others out there who have had open heart surgery And

Knew that this operation would come one day as I had a congenital heart problem. It certainly came around very quickly over the last 2 yrs.

Caravanning and travel had become difficult, and to the point I was not allowed to travel at all. Things moved very quickly and I was operated on last Wed at Epworth in Melbourne.

Recovery is going very well, but know it will be a few months until I feel the full benefit.

The next couple of days I will be sent to Ballarat for 7-10 days of rehab, then home for more rehab with a Heath Care Unit a few Km away.

would love to hear others' stories.

cheers

Glenda

Yours sounds more complicated than mine Glenda.  I went home 6 days after a Double By-pass Op. 14 years ago.  You'll be feeling so much better soon.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Thanks Gerty, Sheba and Neilnruth,

Currently in rehab at St John's in Ballarat. Bit quiet at the moment as most are not working due to the long weekend. Trying to keep up the walking.

Independent with looking after myself. Just management of medications, especially pain relief is the main thing to tweek at present.

Sheba, yes this op is a bit more invasive than a bi pass as they need to actually open the heart, hence a little longer to recover.

just amazing what they can do today!

cheers to all and hope you are enjoying life out there!

Glenda

Home now and trying to take each day as it comes. Just a bit hot at the moment to manage my walks.

Finding out what I can and can't do, more can't at the moment so can be very frustrating. Never been one to rely on others to do things for me!

it helps me to think about how great it will be to hit the road again when I have recovered. We have planned a 10 week trip to SW Western Australia late August. One of our favour our favourite places.

Cheers

Glenda

One is enough for me Milo!

just over 6 weeks now and healing very well. Great not to be puffed all the time.

Still find I get a bit tired but I suppose the heart and body has been through a lot.

Cheers

Glenda.

Update
9 weeks down the track from my op and all going well. Off all pain killers and back yo normal activities.
Amazing how quickly the body can recover from major surgery.
My Doctor is a bit of a mother hen and does not want us to head away Caravanning until 12 weeks
This is the time we fly to Perth for a week.
Really looking forward to a van trip after that.
Cheers Glenda

I think caravanning makes you healthier Glenda. More walking, less worrying! Its gotta be good for your heart! My sciatica has disappeared, my weight already dropped a little after 6 weeks.
I can understand your Dr fussing though, one can find oneself a long way from a hospital sometimes.

Yes Gerty it is the distance from Medical attention and no phone zones that are the main concern.

Yes very much looking forward to getting back on the road.

Cheers Glenda.

Yes Gary had had to look after me a bit! The year is going very quickly.

Hope life on the farm is enjoyable. A catch up is a must!
