Hi all. Monday night,10/02/14 and watching the Sochi Olympics on channel10. I've just seen a trailer for the infotainment show on 10, The Project. They are saying that Free Camping is under attack so for those to whom Free Camping is important, such as me, I would suggest trying to catch the show tomorrow (11/02/14) to find out what is going on. I would suggest it probably has to do with ending free camping in National Parks and the following is a link to an article January 8, 2014 by Dr Bill Garner that describes in detail the bureaucratic thinking behind it. Quite frankly I think it's just another attack on restricting freedom of the individual as Bill Garner makes it quite clear there is absolutely no financial benefit to be gained from such a move http://www.watoday.com.au/comment/clamping-down-on-camping-but-why-20140108-30hhb.html

Hi Vicki, so you're the one watching the Olympics. Thanks for that lead. Yes, just as we have ramped up our potential to free camp, the Governments come up with ways to screw you.
Just as we have down sized our bills to about 6 per year, the Government finds a way to screw me.
Might be easier to say sorry when they catch me than volunteer my hard earned. Will watch The Project tomorrow night.
The Project wanted to interview "grey nomads" and travellers who free camp mostly - there is a thread on this forum to their request, they got a pretty big response - but I lost track of it, while we were moving from one place to the other, and got very busy.
I think, as you say, it is mostly about the new pricing in National Parks, etc., especially in Victoria.
Still a lot of good free spots out there -go see them!!!

Yep it was about the new pricing in National Parks in Victoria and they said it will become a national thing-'in line with other states'. The Minister for Appropriating the Environment gave the usual nonsensical gobbledegook and it really is just all very sad. So the free camping sites in National Parks in Victoria are now a thing of the past BUT I have to say I have become inspired to hook my 'van up to a 4WD for the first time. After all I'm sure there's a lot more to National Parks than just National Park campsites nes pas?

I haven't watched The Project previously, and usually shy away from the 'current affair' programs on the commercial stations.
But tonight, I thought - what the hell ... let's watch it!
How/why do people sit through this show - inane presenters, butchering 'stories', trying (very unsuccessfully) to be funny ... and very little information.
Anyway, the "End of Free Camping" story was the last one on ... and what a load of codswallop - absolutely no actual information, and the couple they interviewed were not Grey Nomads per se, just a couple who have been going to this same site in Liptrap Nat Park since their great-grandfather grew his first pubic hair. And now they got to pay for a site they reckon it is horrendous.
Oh well ... at least I won't have to watch any of the commercial channel 'current affair' shows again. Don't know why I bothered.
Cheers - John
