i am a bit of a procrastinator and the very worse at packing to go on holiday, I think that the stores will all close down and I might be without a few items overnight! We drive a landcruiser and my darling husband tells me that poor old "Tojo"as we affectionately call the cruiser has a job to get over the tiniest of hills....he is of course taking the mickey out of me!!! We are getting ready to start on a big trip looking to be away from home the best part of the year or more God willing. We bought a new Oz Classic by New Age and I feel I have been very well controlled and have not packed my complete house in the van. I have even remembered some good advice given to me by a very knowledgable traveller in a very hot steamy laundry in Darwin some years ago, I was standing in the laundry ironing away, looking as though I had just been for a long swim in my clothing it was so hot and humid....this lady sad to me, may I ask what you are doing, I looked at her and thought has she not ever seen someone ironing before, I answered ironing our clothes! She walked over took the tee shirt out of my hands and said this is the nomads way of ironing, she then continued to fold my tee, then rolled it up and said see ironing done! Her wise words, you are on the trip of your life spend the time looking around you, go for a walk go talk to your caravaning neighbours, do anything but iron! I have always remembered that conversation and I no longer waste my time ironing,,,,,,,,,but I would like some info from the very wise travellers who are crafters.....how do I decide what and how much scrappig, cardmaking or quilting to take!,,,how do you store it?.. Would love to hear from you! oh! To give you an idea of what we are like our house has a lovely sign on the front donated by the family that has the word "Gunnado" written on it! Does that give you an idea why I am asking lol! I have a few baskets of UFO's but doesn't all crafters. Thanks for reading my post

Pick one UFO project to finish whilst on you trip. If you don't get around to it well its not taking up to much room.
But if you do finish it Wahoo!!!
Get the kids to send you another to do. (Have one or two prepared with all the bits and pieces). If they never get sent then they are already for when you get home
Although we are all different, and I can only tell you what I do.
For short trips I only take enough for one project.... I knit and crochet. If I finish it, I find a shop and buy wool or cotton for another one. For longer trips, I make stuff I can share or give away. Its easy to drop stuff off at the local hospital, and they are usually very happy to get baby clothes or small gifts for the old folk.
We also like photography, and sorting photos is usually an ipad job, so small space really.
Genealogy is the real passion though, and these days most of its on the laptop or ipad. Love tracking down cemeteries, war memorials etc and taking photos. Takes no space really, but lots of time and very interesting.
I have fishing gear in the cupboard, but it rarely gets out these days if I'm honest.
If we stay still for long enough, the jigsaw puzzles come out........ never e-jigsaws. When one's finished, it gets donated to a charity shop, and we get another for next time.

My hobbies when travelling are knitting or crocheting, photography, reading, playing games on tablet or laptop.
You need to take a fair bit of "stuff" for scrap booking, card making or quilting so I don't do those while on the road.
Do you knit or crochet or embroider or do cross stitch? Taking a few balls of wool, needles or crochet hook does not take up much space. Knitting or crocheting rugs or premmie clothes would be satisfying, there are sites online with patterns or places to donate to. Yarn can be purchased cheaply along the way.
If you are a reader take an Ereader, if you have a Sony for example you can borrow books free from your home library wherever you have internet access. Check with your library which readers are compatible with their collection as some readers are not.
I was big in card making and my stash for that is way too heavy for a life on the road, so I gave it all to my sister to use up and look after.
I also crochet and have my entire stash of yarn and hooks with me ... two small suitcases worth. I hooker something up and then send it on to it's new owner. My patterns are either in an A4 folder, on the pendo or online.
I am another one passionate about Genealogy however, have come almost to the end of the road for that one and have taken the first little steps to replacing it with painting which I intend to pursue whilst traveling. I have a suggestion - not sure if you are interested in photography, but there is always a call for gravestone inscription recording - all you need is a good camera, ability to record information onto an excel spreadsheet and forward information on USB or upload direct to the project headquarters which is in Malta. There are very few Australian cemeteries registered in this international website - plenty have been recorded for local historical societies and Australian based organisations, but not international. I have all the relevant information and we are intending to give this a go once we hit the road again in a couple of weeks. Other than that, afraid I am useless with needles and thread of any colour, shape or size - I always thought needles were only for digging out splinters ..... who would have dreamed you used them for sewing up hems ........ I thought that was what staplers and safety pins were for!!

I agree about the ironing - I have been using this system to iron and pack clothes for donkeys years .......... I can fit 2 backpacks worth of clothing into 1 by rolling things up ........ always amazed that it is not a common process for many when travelling/packing.

Wanderone, do you have a pattern or instructions for making paper bowls? I bought one made for Oxfam shop and thought it was probably folded paper and PVA glue. Does it go over a mould?
