Another Coldsore

Woke up this morning with another cold sore starting. Thankfully I carry Virasolve with me so no problem getting straight onto it. Will take a while to go as always.

I get at least 3 a year, always in the same spot on my top lip.

Have asked the doctor about it, nothing they can do, caused by a virus etc, etc. I know all that.

Does anyone know of a particular vitamin or herbal treatment or something else that might help keep them at bay so I'm not getting them all the time.

I've Pm'd you Marj.  Also, if you prefer, Tea Tree Oil dabbed on, should clear it up in a few days at most.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Rub some vegemite on it before it breaks. Works a treat.

My friend gets them whenever shes' in the wind. Always uses lip balm and covers her mouth when its windy.
Not sure what creams etc she uses but the wind thing seems to work well for her. She recently had one but told me she hadn't had a breakout for a few years.

Thanks Rosie. I know I got badly wind burnt while at Greens last time so maybe that's why I've got the cold sore now.
I do have lip salves, must remember to use them more often.

Paw paw ointment gets rid of cold sores very quickly and 95% aloe vera gel for lips. Both natural and no chemicals.

Here is a good one for you Marj, try Imperial Leather mens after shave, it does work, put it on the sore a few times a day ,only need a bit on your finger as soon as you feel it coming
works for me I never get them anymore, seems to stop them b4 they get you.

May not work for all ,worth a try.

Marj, my daughter was plagued with cold sores and started taking Lysine tablets - rarely has one now - only when she's not taken any for a few months.

Will definitely be looking into Lysine tabs and the Imperial Leather aftershave. They both sound promising.

Black ointment with iodine in it .. Betadine etc . Being bought up on dairy farm we don't get it..
Built up immunity from cow pox virus which is similar .. We used grease with iodine specially to heal this sore virus.

Cold sores make you feel awful, my sympathy.
My partner was prescribed a course of "Famvir" tablets... take 3 in one dose... and the cold-sores dont come back.
Well he had an allergic reaction to the tablets but recovered after 24 hours, and hasn't had another cold sore. Although he sometimes says it feels like there's a cold-sore starting, nothing comes of it. Might be worth talking to your GP Marj.

That's interesting Gerty. I spoke to the doctor in Echuca. She said the virus is in your system so they will keep coming back.
I remembered I had some Betadine in the van so now using that.

Cold sores are the herpes simplex virus and remain in your body for life unless you clean it out. Stress, bad diet, cold, flu, even some chemical and preservatives all contribute to feeding virus and getting cold sores.

Poor you, I sympathise as I get cold sores as well.

The Lysine tablets are vey good and well worth taking (available in supermarkets and chemists)

I always carry "zovirax" it comes in tube or pump pack (chemist)

The best of all are the cold sore patches (chemist) Put one on at the first sign or tickle and leave in place.

The patch will deliver the medication and stop you from touching it. Makeup can be applied over it as well.

Replace when necessary. A bit fiddly to apply but once mastered you wont be without them.

Wow, I've never heard of some of these remedies! I find if I have two or three oranges each day for a couple of days as soon as it starts, the sores don't come to anything.

Thank you for the welcome Rip & Rosie.

Forgot to mention the patches are clear plastic so hardly noticeable.

One purchase will probably fix three outbreaks.

Not new to caravanning but not on the road at the moment.

Agree with Heather. Our daughter has suffered with them for years, the patches are the best!

Another vote for the Lysine tablets and the Zovirax cream. With these I can usually keep the cold sore to just a little niggle under the skin. No more big sores and scabs. At the moment I am just taking one a day. Working on prevention rather than cure.
