We currently tow with a Pajero 3.8 litre and previously towed with a Challenger 3 litre both vehicles on dual fuel both towed our van well (see avatar) The big advantage of the Challenger is the full chassis and in talking to owners of current model Challengers towing similar vans to mine is all happy no complaints. The 3.8 litre Pajero does tow easier especially in hilly country.

We towed a 2.5t full size van with a Mitsubishi Pajero 3.2l diesel. Whilst it was ok most of the time, there were instances when it was quiet inadequate. Fuel consumption was high to say the least. 18l/100 was the best, 29l/100 (across the Nullabor) was the worst. We sold it and purchased a 200 series Toyota Lancruiser. This vehicle is a 4.5l diesel and as well as maintaining a true 95kph everywhere all day everyday, it returns a fuel consumption of 15l/100 (across the Nullabor) and a worst of 20l/100. The worst was during the heat wave in SA and VIC. Whilst this vehicle is a little more to pay for upfront, if you look after it you will be surprised on the resale value.
Good luck.
