Forum Rules....What Do They Mean To You?

How many of us have actually read the Forum Rules ? http://thegreynomads.activeboard.com/t53677007/welcome-and-forum-rules/

And what do they mean to you as a member?  Also do you re-read them occasionally to refresh your memory?

Now I am no "Angel" and occasionally slip up but in general try to comply with the rules which are there to make this a better forum for everyone IMHO.  There are some who say "rules are there to be broken", or "orders (or rules if you like) are there for the guidance of wise men (make that women too) and the blind obedience of fools".   There have been occasions in my life where I have followed this last saying.

However, my own thoughts on this is that this forum does not belong to us, it belongs to the Webmaster who provides us with a free forum at her expense and the rules are put there as a guide and condition of use to keep it a friendly and positive place for us as members to participate.   Sometimes I wonder if some just don't care about the forum or the conditions that apply to using it or are just ignorant of the rules or are trolls trying to derail it.   I just hope the owner does not tire of these people and decide that running the forum is just not worth the effort if it is not appreciated and get rid of it and just concentrate on the main webpage (like another group did, canned their forum altogether and just kept the main webpage for their group etc)

I do believe though that the majority of members on the forum do respect others and the rules, and are thankful for the provision of the forum for us by Cindy..smile

We could liken the forum to our own homes (or RV's if permanently on the road) we have certain things we will allow or not allow in there by anyone if they wish to visit etc.

These is just my opinion, I am not asking others to agree with me, but I would be interested in other members view on the subject, contrary to mine or otherwise.....

I always expect everyone to know and abide by the rules of ANY forum or suffer the consequences.

Forum rule are there to make it an enjoyable place to visit and participate in..

If members aren't prepared to do that then not only does it annoy others on the forum but it shows they have no respect for the rules or other members and as such there is no place for them on the forum..

I agree with what Vic has said we need to have some rules that keep the forum on track and under control its very seldom that Cindy has to end a post so we do have people who care about other members and have a reasonable understanding of the guidelines for this forum.

I was originally a member of two other forums where there were no real guidelines/rules or if there were they were not managed well needless to say i am no longer a member of those forums,

We can have robust conversations on a wide range of topics as long as we respect each other and the right of other members to have differing opinions to ours.

agree with you on that Bob

without rules it would be a free for all and not as nice a place as it is.

this is one of the very few forums where there is some respect shown for others and I encourage Cindy to keep it that way.

thanks for opening the subject for discussion Vic.

I haven't read the rules. I just use common sense and "do unto others" and seem to get by without ruffling too many feathers.

Being on a number of special interest forums and moderator on one, read all the rules before joining so know what to expect and how to approach it. It seems every forum has their trolls who think they run the show and comment on everything they can, whilst having very little knowledge and in the majority of cases non at all on the subject being discussed. Then they take the moral high ground and claim to be victims, rather than the perpetrators.

Then there are those who demand they are always right, no matter what it is and abuse those they disagree with and who have actual working knowledge.

On the one I moderate, we have two approaches because what we discuss is pretty fringe science and approach, so we have lots of deniers floating in all the time, doing all they can to discount and denounce what we do. We ignore them completely and it isn't long before they get the message and go away. If they don't, they are told they are disrupting the harmony and progress of the forum, so good bye.

Life is easier if you only comment on things you are interested in and or have a working knowledge of, then you are contributing, rather than demeaning. A good running forum is one where everyone sticks to the commonsense rules and not let their egocentric inadequacy take over. This is a pretty good forum, just the same few who make it difficult for the dissemination of real information and not just their bureaucratic propaganda and illogical restrictions.

I have read the rules. I try to stay within them, but on the odd occasion

may become "borderline". I endeavour to be courteous in my comments

and posts.  I use common sense where ever possible, except where sense

departs and I just become common. I tend now to ignore vitriolic posts,

having received a couple after just joining the forum. A technical question was raised

so I went to a mate who was very experienced in the field, and posted his recommended

solution. The vitriolic replies almost turned me off the forum. Fortunately the friendliness

of other members on the forum kept me coming back.

To those friendly members  a big thank you.

Yes, maybe I do recall perusing the rules at one stage.
But as in life. I do not ridicule, disrespect or condemn other's, opinions or point of view.
We are all, after all, pursuing the same goals, mostly enjoying our way of life.
Weather we travel with a caravan, motor home, fifth wheeler or camper.
Some where along the road, we may meet, we may be friends.
We must respect, and consider each with the courtesy due.
It is only with a forum, such as this, that we can share our thoughts.

I remember reading or skimming the rules when I joined, and I have just gone back and reread them, and I think Cindy has done a wonderful job of keeping the rules up to date and relevant to the forum.

Like so many have said here, the rules are really the backstop. If we all apply common sense (not as common as we would like sometimes), and treat others as we would like to be treated we can not go to far wrong. Unless of course we have a few masochists among us.

Hi All - I work on the 2 rule policy....
Rule 1 - I'm NEVER wrong.
Rule 2 - If ( God Forbid ) I,m not 100% right - Please refer to Rule 1 ....... lol

I worked out early in life that we all march to a different tune & that most of the time I'm the one going in the wrong direction, So if your opion is different to mine, you must be wrong... lol

I saw one blatant abuse of forum rules today, so they are out there (those who abuse them). furious

Like others it was removed like others of it's ilk, so good the see Cindy is on the ball.smile

Often we do not see them as they are removed before most of us do, thank goodness.smile

IMHO, as this forum is privately owned and provided free to us by the owner, the very least we can do as a courtesy is to read the forum rules and try to comply with them.   Not much to ask in my opinion. hmm
