G'day, it's me back again. Over recent months my wife and I (ammerchewer caravanners) have read, listened to, and looked at a myriad of information and samples of Stone Guards. Some with "mud flaps" & some without.
We have questioned each other re the need for these and we see the possibility of stones damaging .... The underside of the 'van; the front of the 'van; A frame attachments (gas bottles & the like); the rear window (by deflection) of the tow vehicle.
Are we thinking along the right lines?
At this point of our caravanning "careers" we do not intend to go "Off Road" other than the few unsealed that may occur occasionally when cruisin' thru' western NSW and SW Qld. Hence a huge part of our travels will be "on the black top". Assuming it's considered a good idea to instal stone protection ....
Which of the two varieties we mention would be more efficient? If I attached a heavy shade cloth type material to the underside of the A frame together with full width mud flaps on the tow vehicle would I get "as good as" results?

Thanks Baz, we thinks you've answered our question. I have a "sheet" of heavy rubber in the shed all I need is some strong metal strips and a few nuts n bolts, and time all of which will be as easy as ... Also have an old "foam" rubber camping mattress and am thinking making up a "pad" to attach velco strips so we can cover rear window of the 'Cruiser ..... Probably over the top but Mrs will feel better
Next I need to look at is windscreen protection .... memory tells me that my Dad had a frame with about 1/2 inch square cage wire stretched across. Me thinks that today there will some a tad more attractive ... and less intrusive.

Hi Pleasure to assist,,, one suggestion is don't make the support strips (chassis to rubber) too strong,,, ours are only 3mm thick and if you go bush and bottom out in the rear, they bend back and don't break. I've just pushed them into place with my boot ie back to vertical ,,, only ever broken 1 in 7 years.

An update on our stone guard question. We went with the Stone Stomper and we were very happy with the purchase. What a great Aussie company. They were fantastic, emails replied within hours even on weekends. The product is high quality, well made and delivery was within a very short time. Unfortunately our trip has been delayed for health reasons so we have yet to try it out. Now hoping to leave early August.
