Yowah OLD

Leaving today after 5 days in this lovely friendly community of about 60 people (average age is 64!). Thursday dinner at the CP (need to book)  is $15 for a 3 course meal, have a bet on the Duck race  for donated prizes, .... all proceeds go to their excellent weekly  flying doctor service.

Scratched unsuccessfully in the fossicking area for opals after doing the 2 hour $15 mine tour, then paid $1 and got some offcuts from one of the processors. Market day on Sunday - polished opals VERY cheap there.

Free hot artesian baths at the CP, and the new artesian pool will be open in a few weeks. Great cafe/library, laundry, dump point, big free camp with shower and toilet SUPPORTED by the CP owners ....... The owners have opened up the CP facilities to all - very welcoming people. $20 powered, $8 unpowered sites.

Sealed road all the way from Cunnamulla.

So pleased I took the detour and will come back one day to do the trip - also on sealed road - up to Quilpie.

Love Yowah - sounds like the new CP owners (or newish since I was last there) know their business! Great to see a free camp supported by a caravan park - but then, it is such a small place, it needs to be welcoming

Loved our stay there, found a couple of pieces of boulder on a wander through - not much, but a souvenir.

We stayed at Quilpie also - at the CP - beware if you are there over a long weekend - everything shuts down by noon on Saturday - so make sure you get fuel etc. beforehand.

We were lucky in that the owner of an opal mine gave us permission to do some fossicking on their claim - got ourselves a huge rock covered in opal - just beautiful. Make sure you go to the church - opal covered alter, lectern and font - beautiful! Also a trip up on top of Coke Bottle Hill (or bottle top hill) gives you an overview of the surrounding country. A game of golf at the gravel links is another interesting part of the town. The bakery is (or was) owned by a lady who was a world champion ringer (shearer). There is also a Pub with No Beer - owned by a religious group I believe.

Sounds like a wonderful spot Spida. Will be putting that on the list of things to do. Isn't it great these little places that nobody knows about or has heard of, yet offer so much.

Thanks Jules for the heads up on Quilpie also. Looking forward to getting out in that area and exploring.

Gday...

Yep ... a fantastic place is Yowah .... loved my stay there - ditto all Spida and Jules have said.

However, whilst it is a little place, I doubt it is "a little place that nobody knows or has heard of" .... they get 1,000s of travellers a year - and during the 'winter months' it is a fairly busy place - both with travellers and miners who leave for summer and come back each winter.

A couple of photos to also whet ya appetite Shekon

Cheers - John
