Tasmania...

I've seen a lot bit of Negativity about Tasmania of late,

so I just wanted to say..

that I've never been treated Negatively in Tasmania and have felt most welcome each time I go down there...

you have to be aware that there are some places that don't like Free Campers - Same goes here on the Main Land as well, so that's nothing new

I know that there's some Negative backlash from FCs around Burnie from the CPs.. but that's fine..

just go down the road east towards Penguin or west to Cooee..

you have to SMARTEN up, get Wikicamps on your smartphone and keep up with the latest information and comments on each site.. make comments yourself at each stay to advise others.. this is a real big help

the last time we were there was for only a week and here's where we stayed at

Deloraine - Free

Oatlands - Free (set up area near flour mill to attract Free Campers)

Hobart BIG4 - $40 with discount.. furious (if we had had wikicamps we'd have probably got a better spot just outside of the city)

Hamilton - Free (although I have heard $5 now) $1 hot showers there

Lake Burbury Camping Area - $10

Penguin CP - $25 (you could stay back at Preservation Bay for Free)

.....................

times might be changing so we have to change with it.. if places start to charge then so be it.. don't be a sook.. wise up and find new areas with Wikicamps...

We went to Tassy in 2012 and had no problem at all except for an A*^& hole running a BP servo on the way back from Pt Arthur who gave us a hard time over gearbox oil , The good wife fixed him up though, other than that we had a fabulous time and will return some day.

I did have a bad experience last time I was down there but that had nothing to do with Tasmania or the friendly people down there...

i'll try and clean this story up a bit... I wrote it back on another forum earlier in the year when the incident happened

As we sail out of Melbourne on the Spirit of Tasmania we have a bitter Taste in our mouths after an incident at the port..

As many cars and caravans lined up this person who was out of his car for some unbeknown reason walked across in front of us as we were moving slowly forward...

What I didn't see was that he was getting into a car beside our van as we were pulling forward to the ticket box.. as he pulled the door open on his car he swung it into the side of our van and got it caught on the hot water service door...

Well,,... it peeled his door back towards the front door bending it up....

The water service door on the van is bent up and I say... "bugger me!!!!"

a girl in the other car is going nucking futs... and they start blaming me.. confuse

I says....I never opened the Fricken door... Angry

The guy that did open it blamed the wind... evileye

But this b**** is going bananas saying she going to break every window on our van...

Only god knows where I got the strength not to knock her fin lights out... furious I've never seen anything like it in my life

Low socioeconomic scumbags.... of course there was a "DOG" in the car as well... and I'm not talking about his MRS although the dog was better trained...

I'm so angry I could spit... furious

so my advice to you when getting on the Spirit, is to get on the back end... everyone is trying to turn up early and cars and people are everywhere not doing what they are supposed to do....

if you have an accident with some moron... just exchange names and addresses and let the insurance companies deal with it

this lot also threatened me on the boat as well... we never saw them for the entire trip until we were nearly at Devonport.... when he threatened me I told him if he'd like a shot at the title then go ahead...

he just stood there looking at me so I walked off...

I shudder to think what would have happened if happened to a more elderly couple than us...

Now come on guys and gals - stop pretending Tassie is a nice place to visit.

We don't want a whole lot of terrorists - oopps - tourists (borrowed from Bill) down here, we want to keep it for ourselves.

There are good and bad everywhere Blue, you were unlucky to catch a moron and his b*tch (and his dog).
Did you see the rego plate?? They might have been mainlanders??

Lovely place to visit or live.

Looove Tassie!!  smile
Spent 5 weeks travelling there in 2010 and can honestly say that there was not an unpleasant incident anywhere.

Excellent crossings both ways on the "Spirit".

No matter where you drive, the scenery is beautiful...and often breathtaking!

We were there in strawberry season...Yummm...but all of the fresh produce...fruit/veges/seafood etc; was great.

The people we met were all friendly and helpful with advice on places to visit. I intend to go back sometime without a return passage booked so that I can stay for as long as I like and amble around at my own pace.

The only downside (if you could call it that)...my friend said that when they built the roads, they got paid extra for each bend. wink smile

pauline, Have a ball!! I'm sure you will. biggrin

Safe and happy travels.

Cheers.

How,

You are right Peter, a great state for sure at any time of the year. Unfortunately there is always one that will spoil it. Thank goodness it's usually only in the minority.

I have been lucky to visit all places mentioned in this thread and Blue, "Oatlands" is a great town, the building's are just magnificent, including that wind mill.

Have been to Tassie a couple of times over the past several

decades and loved it each and every time.

We are booked on the Spirit in February next year and plan 2 1/2 months of excellent touring.  Sure the Spirit seems expensive when towing a van but when you divide that by 80 days it's reasonable.

Love the pix that you have included and the other posts.  I have seen nothing but praise for the Apple Isle and looking forward to our visit.

I can sympathize with you Blue , While I was reading your posts it reminded me of one thing that I forgot , on the trip home we were lined up to get back on the boat , we were the first in line with a lovely young couple next to us , then of all thing turned up was a bunch of bikies about 10 or 15 of them who proceeded to park between us and the gate , then they decided to have breakfast and wondered off , the gates opened for us to go on but all these damn bikes parked across the road blocking access, ignorant pri$#^s .

Thanks dodger, we will probably turn left when we get off the boat and make it to the east coast for the last few days............though it will be busy anywhere at that time of the year I suppose but is the only time we can do it.

We always advise you turn up to board the ferry towards the end of the time. What those first on don't realise is - they'll be last off. Last time we went over we just drove up, showed tickets and drove on. No waiting. And we were one of the first off over there.
Love Tasmania.

boarding on the ferry is the luck of the draw it does not matter what..1st on or last on

they quey you in five or six lanes then call lanes in random to board

some go on 5 deck if you are last on you could go up the ramp to 7 deck

depends on LUCK  mate was in front of me at devonport finished in a different

line to board   we finished on different decks  he was off 20 minutes before me

  its like a lottery

yes, I've learnt my lesson...

next time i'll wait till the end of boarding.. 15 to 20 mins to go..

just drive up and straight on...

it was funny too.. the Tasmanians that saw the incident and saw how this lot were carrying on were quick to point out that the bogans were Mainlanders.. lol

great sense of humour have our double headed friends  smile
