Hi from Newbie with question….

Hello everyone,

Jerry here from Perth about to embark for the very first time in a motor home  - right around this amazing country. I'm glad I realised that The Big Lap does not refer to a way of drinking a nice SSB from a bucket or I could have embarrassed myself.

I wonder if anyone knows the answer to this question - the motor home I'm about to buy only has lap belts in the driver and passenger seats up front - not 3 point across the chest type belts. Is this ok legally? (the safety part is another issue!)

Also, its a 4 berth but there's only the two seat belts as above and I think I read somewhere that there are supposed to be the same number of belts as there are berths. The RV is a 1988 Country Coach.

Thanks in advance and look forward to meeting some of you on the road. smile

And Merry Christmas!!!

Regards

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I believe the law is that the driver and front passenger must have a lap/sash seatbelt and if there is a centre seat it only needs to be a lap seatbelt. You are also required to have as many seatbelts as you have berths. So you would be required to have seatbelts for the other seats and if they are frontfacing you need them to be lap/sash belts. If they are side facing you are only required to have lap belts. Therefore the RV you are looking to buy is not legally fitted,I don't think the age of the vehicle would make any difference, although someone may know different.

Merry Christmas,
Doris

Welcome to the gang Jerry, enjoy here and out in the playground.

As to your question, I am of the understanding Lap Sash is the law for forward facing seats. Only exception is middle and side seats.
