yep..........very sad. A young guy with young family and used to driving in the outbacks. He did try to make it back to his truck, but it was too late.

I wonder whether its time for the govt to make truckies travelling in designated (remote areas) carry a minimum amount of drinking water and a PLB - you'd be shocked at how many have neither and don't count on a truck break-down - all the large trucking co's like Toll and Linfox should be mandated to make sure every remote driver has one and his depot supervisor signs off on each trip to say its been checked and ok.

Hard to do it to us vanners - but like to think we all travel with at least sufficient water to last us a few days (and do we all carry a sat ph or PLB when we go bush???)

BTW A situation like breaking down in a remote area and activating a PLB is considered to be OK by the relevant authorities, so long as you are remote and theres not the likelihood of other vehicles passing by on a regular basis or an occupied dwelling within a short walking distance (they say "occupied" means you can see human activity around the dwelling from your vehicle)

Info on beacons.

When should a distress beacon be
used?
Distress beacons should only be used when
there is a threat of grave and imminent danger.
In the event of an emergency, communication
should first be attempted with others close by using
radios, phones and other signalling devices. Mobile
phones can be used but should not be relied upon
as they can be out of range, batteries run low or
become water-damaged.
