Hi Woody & Sue,

I have a 1080P-HD dash cam, HDMI GS8000GS and it works well. I particularly like it because it is small and unobtrusive. it is not necessary to watch it whilst driving so a large screen is not required. This unit also has a G sensor which shuts it off after a collision so that the recording of the event cannot be overwritten. Cost me $39.00 on ebay with free postage.

There are others out there that have more features but some of these features may have a negative outcome. For example if your speed is recorded at slightly above the limit it could give the person that caused the accident with you an out for liability.

I have a Street Guardian SG9665GC Full HD GPS DVR and it works well. I have a clip of the cow I hit a couple of weeks ago that shows the speed I was doing and the shows how it was virtually invisible until it turned and ran onto the road. It also shows that it would have been extremely difficult to avoid hitting the cow due to having a caravan on the back. Thought it would be great evidence for the insurance claim, but they didn't require it and the claim will be sorted out no worries I am told.

Edit: umm oops, no it doesn't show the speed in the video, you have to use the viewing program to see the vehicle speed at the time. The previous one I had did show the speed on the video.

I used to have the Navman MyVu 358 the version with the 5Meg camera for a clearer picture. Very satisfied with it .Small unobtrusive and use and forget unless you wanted to save an incident on your computer. I saw the Navman MyDrive LM GPS/Recorder in Dick Smiths at $199. JB at $299 Meant it would only use one connector. Chrissie present for self.

Big mistake, long story but I had to get another from Navman Australia to replace a faulty unit which still didn't work after repair.

I wish I had kept the MyVu 358 or upgraded to the version now available with GPS MyVu 388.

Best item in the car IMHO a Crash/Dashcam.

Hi Woody & Sue,

Yes we have the Blackview DV500 records both night and day and while parked. Runs a Micro 32g SD card. records 8 hours  continuous then over rides again till you need to stop it.

We hate the auto voice recording which we have to remember to turnoff every time we get in.

We have recorded so many dicks out their the coppers would never need to book another motorist full stop.

Hi J & L, when you have your SD card in your computer for viewing and re-formatting (which should be done every couple weeks) you can, in Blackvue settings, turn off the voice recording so you don't need to remember to do it every time you get in.

Having said that, I leave mine on so that, in the event of an incident I can call out rego number & vehicle make and colour in case it is not clearly visible on the recording.

Cheers Neil

I run the Street Guardian SG9665GC in the wifes little rocket & my work ute they are fantastic but went for a custom application in the motorhome.

Front & rear 1080 HD camera's that also second as reversing camera's with lipstick cameras mounted into the mirror housings on both sides. 6 channel 12v DVR records picture & sound on all four simultaneously & will hold 63 days of image & sound before overwriting, can record from the GPS if you want as well but I didn't bother connecting it. Cable plugs into the laptop to view recordings.
.
As soon as the "house" is turned on it starts & runs 24/7, was handy when some clown backed into the bus in the car-park at natures window in Kalbarri, they thought they had got away with it until the insurance company contacted them. Also provided the police with video of two ratbags who were pinching camping gear from fellow campers while we were all asleep in Litchfield park last year.

Worth spending a little extra to get the full HD cameras on the "Dash Cams" as the image is much clearer & you CAN read a rego plate even at night on the playback.

Hi Woody & Sue

I have the DOD LS460w full HD and did quite a bit of reading up on dash cams. There are many and some very good ones, but I chose this one because of the wide angle 140 degree picture, which does not seem to accentuate the fish eye effect as much. It has  Sony quality sensor set up in it which gives very clear day video and great low light night video. You can turn the screen off whilst driving, which will then display a black screen showing your speed and compass direction. Has motion detection sensing and video protection button which when pressed, saves that particular clip from erasure. If you have an incident just press the button at the time. A lot of the cameras do have this feature also. It  uses a 32G micro disk ( which you pay extra for) and has plenty of other features if needed. I bought a multi card reader for $23 for direct playback on my computer.

I'm happy with my choice- good luck with yours.

Alla

We don't use one. We look out of our utes windscreen as we're driving along. LOL. Who needs a dash cam to record what you've been looking at all day? Who needs a rear facing camera on your caravan to see what you've already seen before you passed it? Just toys for bored over cashed retirees IOO. LOL.

Hi DD , I think you may be missing the point, we use ours as security as a record of the morons that want to hassle us on the road .Ours turns on and off with the ignition and runs in the back ground all the time.90% of the time you forget it's even running, my two bobs worth.

Exactly.  Also, heaven forbid you are ever in an incident where it comes down to 'his word against mine' and you wish you had a reliable witness you will be glad of the ever watchful dash camera.

Actually cameras for both applications are very useful. Forward facing for recording accident situations for insurance purposes, for recording places you visit so you have a visual to show someone who might want to see what the place is like. With the GPS models you can save a track of the places you went for refreshing your memory when trying to remember where a certain place was for future visits. We had a good reason for ours a couple of weeks ago when we hit a cow in western NSW. We had a record of exactly what happened and how it was seen from the drivers perspective, and also a record of the speed we were travelling at, and an exact location (GPS coords) of where it happened.

Rear view cams on the back of the van are a very good adjunct to your towing mirrors so that you have no blind spots and can see that stupid bugger sitting right up your clakker, which would have been invisible in your mirrors... even clearviews biggrin. A reversing mirror is also very handy when the person behind you giving directions stands in a place you can't see them, and to be able to see the object you are about to hit.

I have both a rear view camera with microphone so SWMBO can speak to me without

having to yell when reversing in. Also the dashcam has been handy when silly people argue

about what they've done and we point to the dashcam and say your on camera. They then back off

and go away. Very handy things to have.smilesmile

Have to agree with desert dweller. Toys for the bored, technology for technology sake, just as well they don't cost much otherwise they would be a horrible waste of money for 99.9% of people.

You obviously haven't read the posts for dash cams, or haven't understood the posts, or...confuse.... better leave it there I think...

I think you would find that, under current Australian Law, the "evidence" would be inadmissable, but you could play it in the front bar. Someone would believe you.

Thanks everyone Alla like you I like the DOD LS460w too will probably go with it
As for weather the pic's are allowed in court or not is of no real concern at this point, however if a simple written entry in a diary is leagel in a court room why wouldn't a recording on a dash cam be also . Anyway the insurance industry seem to be happy with them and that's my main thinking on the use for it, as well as revision on our daily travels.
Hope I never need to find out

Hi all, yes dash cams are very necessary if involved in an altercation on the road. They are not "toys" and insurance companies welcome the evidence, also, the camera evidence is certainly accepted as evidence in court. "Jul 18, 2014 - Slater & Gordon senior lawyer Tony O'Hurley said he expected more dash cam video to be used in court cases. "Dash cam footage is admissible as evidence in a court case as long as it is not used to film a private activity," he said.

With or without a dash cam enjoy the travel and play well.

Here is one case in probably many many thousand where the "bored technology toyman was very happy to have his dashcam as evidence.  Not that it would go to court once the scammer realised he was out of luck.

I saw another one where a bloke was selling his laptop. The buyer met him and was pictured on the cam. The buyer wanted to show the laptop to his mum in a block of flats they were stopped at, but when he got out of the car, the buyer did a runner. Full face pic on cam.

We recorded a police chase that ended with police drawing weapons and breaking the side window of the car and hauling the suspect out onto the ground. That was pretty exciting, didn't think to take it to the local TV station at the time. Could have been worth a few bucks.

Hello all,
another use for a Dash Cam
I had a DOD LS300W, bought it in Australia, it didnt last very long, but it was replaced under warranty, after I posted it back twice, the replacement was a slightly different model, a LS330W, it is a lot better, except for the battery problems a lot of them have, it will now only work when I have the ignition turned on, when I turn the key off it beeps and carries on until what is left of the battery goes completely flat.
OK, have had a bit of a bitch,
but I like it, it records a very good realistic picture, no hint of Fish Eye, mine is a 140" angle coverage,
I do a bit of traveling, at the end of the day I download the files onto my Computer, delete what I dont want, then at a later date when I am stuck at home with itchy feet because I cant go traveling, I can go back and have a look at where I have been and dream about my next trip,
have done that after a recent trip down along the Snowy Mountains Highway, fantastic scenery, just wish I had noticed the plug had come out when I went up to Charlotte Pass, so I missed that bit, probably the best bit of the trip.

We have two dash cameras. One is a MiVue 580 and the other is a Thinkware Dash Camera F750 which also has a rear facing camera. After a major incident on the Anne Beadell in 2014 we decided to invest in one, namely the MiVue. We recently bought a new vehicle and had the Thinkware dash camera fitted from new. Insurance companies do like them and ours is simply for our 'insurance, or peace of mind.' So far we have never had to use it for the purpose bought and we are quite happy if we never have to, but we believe it will support our 'version' of events.

On our first trip with the MiVue we thought it would immediately come into its own as a car in front of us decided to pass a motorhome, but there was a ute coming towards it; made no difference to them they just kept going. We backed off considerably as did the ute driver. How there wasn't an accident was beyond us.

I have just installed a Kings brand camera which turns on with the ignition. It runs all the time and as many have pointed out for insurance if needed.

Had a expensive brand before $240 which never worked properly and overheated to the extent you could not hold it in your hand for long. Returned under warrant for full refund no questions.

Just remember to take it off if you are parking the car in hot weather.

We have a cheapy ($60) that provides a reasonable quality image with minimal data usage, not that we are worried about accidents but find it handy to keep the days trip recording.
Each day or if only traveling a short distance every few days we save the files to a portable hard drive, great for reviewing and adding to our records of dates and times and things along the way. (I have a GOPRO but often forget the charge it or turn it on and worry about thieves, the cheapy is plugged into the lighter socket and starts with the engine.)
Just need to turn off the sound recording function to the protect any viewers from hearing the occasional swear word argument between the driver and navigator or descriptive turn of phrase about other road users that may longer be seen as politically correct.
