Am wondering if one can "modify" Ye olde wind-down stabilising legs so they can be wound from side on rather than having to kneel down to guide "winder" to connection and manually wind down the legs.
can the existing be modified to a side on connection that can be wound by a cordless drill?
OR, do we have to consider total replacement with a new set up?

I've simply attached a short length of 25mm plastic pipe to the chassis at each leg to guide the winder to the head - you only have to lean down, insert cordless drill winder in hole a pull the trigger. Simple and cheap. I'd add a picture but it's dark outside.
Good luck.
The smartest way for us that have difficulty bending / squatting down is to retro-fit a hydraulic system. Not overly expensive, simple to operate, and all done from the front of the van. Can be manual pump, or for extra dollars, electrically operated.
Bob, you can remove the steadies and remount them across the van but that will require a little chassis modification. One van I had had the front steadies mounted cross wise on the front cross member of the chassis and the rear ones were mounted longitudinally along the chassis side rails.
If you are going to change the direction of your drive you will have to use some right angle gearing instead. The right angle drive will be no more trouble than remounting your steadies cross wise just more expensive.
Rather than play around with your steadies, get yourself a long reach winder. Just cut the crank off the end and replace it with your drill. I have seen people operate that set-up without trouble.
