Waanyarra Recreation Reserve between Dunolly and Tarnagulla VIC.
This was a mining town in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
You turn east onto Waanyarrra Cemetery Road from the main highway and pass the historic cemetery on the way in along the 2km of very good dirt road.
Camps 8 VIC site 440 - GPS 36 49 00 S 143 48 02 E
This is a good spot for a day or two or just as an overnighter. There is no time limit for camping.
There are long-drop toilets and tank water - dependent on rain obviously. There was both water in the tank AND rain when I was there.
Pets are allowed 'under control. There is no dump point BUT there are no grey water restrictions either.
There is no mobile or internet coverage (Telstra 3G) and the nearest is right in the towns of Dunolly (10Km) or Tarnagulla (9Km). The highway between Dunolly and Tarnagulla has no coverage either.
Plenty of space around the 'day-use' area as well as some spots in the bush nearby.

We were going to stay there for a while last year. Not a blade of grass to be seen, dusty & most of the bush had been burnt for campfires. Not much flat ground in the camping area. The permanent looking fossickers all gave us unfriendly suspicious looks when we drove in & OUT!

It certainly was dry and not much grass ... let alone green grass ... when I was there. But that is pretty much most of Victoria in that area at that time.
Interestingly, I didn't camp in the 'main' camp area but was off in the bush a bit. No shortage of wood for my camp within 5 minutes walk for the week I was there.
There were four other prospectors in the 'main' camp - one a 'permanent' in a bus, one 'permanent' in a campertrailer and big annex - the other two had only been there for a short time and were not staying long.
There was the 'caretaker' off in the bush away from the 'main' camping ground.
I had long and friendly conversations with all of them. They even took me to some of the places of interest around the area. They enjoyed sharing their 'tall tales and true' about their prospecting.
A spot of interest they took me to was the Puddler nearby - here's a pic.
When we planned to camp in this spot the place was full to overflowing with rusty old buses & ancient moldy canvased tents. Might try our luck next time we're in the area. The wildflowers in the Ironbark forests of central VIC are beautiful. There's a great low cost camp on the Loddon River at Newgridge not far away from this location. We ended up there. Great pub meals just a short stroll away, nice clean relatively new facilities.
