I am about to organise a tour of Victoria. I have 8 weeks to spend touring and I just don't want to travel the highways. Is this too much time - not enough. If too long I thought of crossing the border to SA.
Your question is a bit like how long is a bit of string
It all depends on how fast - or slow - you want to travel ... how long you want to stay in any one place ... which 'tourist attractions' you want to see ... eight weeks could be fine ... or far too long .. or far too short
Victoria is a small state for sure ... but it has HEAPS of attractions and beautiful camps. Perhaps a bit like Tasmania. They say you can see all of Tassie in two weeks - but those who have travelled there have spent upto three months and say they didn't see it all.
I just took seven weeks to do this very tiny journey - stayed some places overnight and some places upto seven days to 'sightsee' the area.

You could probably get a reasonable overview of Victoria in that amount of time if you kept moving daily. To really see the place properly you'd need more like 8 months than 8 weeks even then you'd miss out on a lot. It's a BIG, LITTLE State believe me. We've been regularly camping around it in various forms for over 40 years & there's still quite a lot that we haven't seen.

Hello Thor Im from Victoria you could probably spend 6 months and still not see everything. May I suggest not to miss Ballarat Sovereign hill Then further south the Werribee Beach Caravan Park to fish for flaties and Bream. Tour the great ocean road to sample the crayfish in those towns along there like Apollo Bay and if you go far enough see the Princess Margaret Rose Caves near portland you can actually camp there then from there you are not far from the SA Border. We toured the SA coast doing the big lap there are lots of blue swimmers and whiting also Snapper in deeper water. PS there is also the famous Green Lake between Elmore and Stanhope up further north. Also depending from which way you come to vic inland or coast Tokumwal town beach is a good camp. Enjoy your trip.

But then there is still the Grampians, North West, North Central, North East, the high country and West, South and West [he meant East] Gippsland - and even the outskirts of Melbourne.
I have been camping in Victoria for the past 50 years, on and off, and I still have places I ain't seen.
Eight weeks is really just a quick "drive through" tour but I guess Thor only has limited time available for the trip.

Why not look at your Victoria trip as a reconnaissance tour? Try a few different regions for short stays and see which ones you like best, then base your second trip around these! There's the Great Ocean Road (then across the SA border to the awesome Limestone Coast); The Grampians (we could spend the whole time there!); The High Country and Bright (for cooler weather, autumn colours and snow); Melbourne and surrounds (the whole Port Phillip Bay area is awesome); the Goldfields region (Ballarat and Bendigo are just the beginning); the Mallee (wonderful small towns and some fantastic National Parks like Wyperfeld); the Riverland (Swan Hill, Mildura etc) - and don't forget the bakery at Tatura for Australia's BEST vanilla slice!
