Sorry to put up such a pooey subject BUT my recent case of a tummy bug and its associated fun and games got me to thinking how bloody delicate our guts are.
I can not recall ever not washing after pooing, its been ingrained into us since I was a lad. In the past few days (now in its 4th day) I have been squirting a lovely yellow coloured liquid (sorry to be so graphic).
Went to the quack (Dr) yesterday. Temp of 38.9 C, BP 103 over 70 (low systolic) tummy distended, yes I have what could be a e coli infection. I was quizzed on where I had been when I went overseas in November, asked where we shopped etc.
The rundown on all this is that the simple act of washing hands FOR 3 MINUTES with a medicated soap will put an end to most of these bugs, he also told me that the local woolworths is a prime source of infection in this area. Dirty, grubby people handle the food you are about to put in your mouth. He had 5 cases of this same bug in the morning I saw him, the clinic counted 15 cases.
Bottom line... We now have a new health and cleanliness regimine... ALL fruit will be washed when we bring it home, in the sink with a little vinegar added. ALL hands will be washed after we shop, we now have a waterless hand wash in the ute. I am convinced these bugs are out to get us.
Again, Im sorry to be so graphic.
Cheers, and one day soon I will get back to solid food.

I know exactly what you are talking about Phil. Had the same a couple of Xmas ago. Although it couldn't be diagnosed, not sure why, it lasted for many weeks, about 8 I think.
Doc advised me to eat boiled chicken and rice with carrot, broccoli and beans. Nothing else except boiled water.
I can tell you it was a miserable Xmas.
While I empathise with your situation Phil, waaaay to much information.
We shop at Woolworths and Foodland all the time and travel to SE Asia now and again, never been stricken with anything like you describe.
Hope you recover soon.
Thanks Santa and gang. Sorry about the graphic details BUT this is a serious subject not many want to talk about. We were on the Voyager of the Seas recently and HAD to wash every time we went into an area that served food. I have seen that on a ship that docked in Sydney today there were 180 cases of what the media called gastro, it was in fact novo virus which is never fun
Evidently our woolworths isnt that keen on cleanliness nor are the farmers of the area according to our doctor. I guess ist about where you live and who the local manager is.
Take care folks, I am at last on the mend again and eating solid foods. I feel sorry for anyone who has this bug more than a few days.
Cheers

Blaze you hit the nail on the head - we are bombarbed with ads for "antibacterial" handwashes, people carry them with them when they go out. We are not building any "immunity" to the germs or allergens. Be clean, be hygienic, but be sensible.

Gday Jules, hope your life is as wonderful as ours.
I have to agree with most of what you say. I often wonder if its not us who breed these superbugs just by being clean. However, in thinking about hand hygiene and hand washing etc, I am of the opinion that if ships at sea insist on washing hands before a meal there has to be some merit to that.
Yes we wash after each visit to the loo and should do so before we handle food but there must be something said about washing hands, not to excess, but good hand hygiene. The big question is, when is enough, enough? Which is the same as how long is a piece of string?
Take care and love to Billeeeeee etc.

Boy this such a slow moving page, I can only assume all the Grey Nomads are too busy training for the Rio Olympics. Simmo.
Gday...
Personally, I have no inclination to share in public to strangers, my ailments, their treatment, and any limitations they may, or may not, cause me.
I just read all the new posts - some I ignore, some I smile at, some I shake me melon at, some I groan at, some I learn from.
Cheers - John

I know where you are coming from John however, I am forever the optimist. Millions of people have millions of problems aches and pains and millions of solutions. If I can jag one lousy solution that helps any of my aching joints, back and feet, I will be grateful and don't care where the solution came from.
Cheers.......Simmo.
