Free Greens

Please don't take this question the wrong way. but how long will Greens Lake remain a free camp when so many people use it to their advantage and stay for extended periods? Also with so many free camping it's costing the water authority? to keep it clean and tidy ( toilets, mowing garbage removal ) not to mention the grey water so close to the lake. So do yo think it will last much longer?

The water board and the local council share the management of Greens, I believe - they have closed off some areas, stopping camping on the lake behind, closer to the highway - there are usually skip bins, and if all use them properly, no problem. From what I recall, it is the back lake that they want to keep as clean and clear as they can, hence the limiting of camping. The limit to stay was 6 e towmonths - not many would stay for extended periods in the winter there, just short stops. Regular campers there know about grey water, etc.

The local council is Rochester, and most people shop in there - I know that for the Christmas celebrations last year, almost $3,000.00 was spent in the town - not all just for Christmas day, but overall - so the traders are happy, and the council are happy, as well as campers. The water board are happy to have people there, it limits the "hoons" taking over.

$3,000 ?? That's just on the new traditional Friday fish and chip night. Rochester not corop.

Kyabram get a big boost to their economy too. As do Stanhope. I would guess much more than $3,000 though.

From what I hear this year, there is no plan to change things. YET anyway. As Jules said, there is no camping or boating activities at the back lake or around to point to the far East of the boat ramp. Most camping takes place along the foreshore with campers up at the tree line etc during busy periods.

There is no charge or donation to stay at this truly great place. It does say by donation in the camps book but that was many many moons ago and no longer, for now anyway.

It will get extremely busy from now until end of January due to school hol's.

DON'T FORGET IT CLOSES HERE FROM 30/12/15 UNTIL 1/1/16. NO EXCEPTIONS....ALL OUT.
