Greens Lake.....take two

After being a Greens Lake Refugee since last Monday I have returned.

Guess where I have set up camp?  Go on guess.

Well, Glenelg (Dave) and Myself came down the road after being in the crowd of around at least 30-40 vans or boats all lined up  both sides of Greens Lake Rd on the Midland Hwy to find the spots to the right of the ramp not taken. Mmmm, can't leave those empty so in we got, set up just in time for happy hour, phew! Still a few things to finish off but they can wait until tomorrow.

While being refugee's, a few of us spent 4 days at Girgarre about 20km east. Nice friendly place but hot as. Don't buy gas there as $45 for a 9kg bottle was a but steap. Just 5km down the road at Stanhope was $27 Kyabram $30 and Rochester $27.  Work that one out cos I can't. Oh well.

Not sure how long I will stay at this stage but the lake sure is calling my name to come on in, sooooo, see ya.

Great place Gigarre. My only dislike is the showers. The room is not fully sealed from the elements and on a cold windy day, it is very cold and uncomfortable  in the shower room. Regarding gas, I use 2 kg. gas bottles. The cheapest gas I have found anywhere in Victoria is the hardware store at Stanhope. $6.00 for 2 kg.

$3.00 per KG, Ken. Saves going to Shepparton where you might save $1.00 a 9kg bottle.

I am talking about getting your own bottle filled not swap n go.

Happy New Year to you also Dave. Hot tap !!! I assume this is about the shower.. I'm referring to the construction of the shower room. No ceiling, only a wire grill, the door and walls are about 6" above the floor, consequently on a cold windy day the room can get quite chilly, and I can't afford to be like the brass monkey !!! biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

The Corop Store is going strong. He was out at the lake selling ice, as in frozen water, on the last day I was there. They stock a wide range of goods and you can have mail sent there for collection. Great little shop. Oh, also can get your gas bottle filled.

Never had a problem with the one shower at Girgarre. The only useable shower now is the one in the disabled toilet. The ones in the ladies and gents have been taken out of action. Probably because of backpacker damage. They have now been banned from camping there.

It'good to know that there is a local store to support near a free camp, but I'm still a little confused with free campers supporting local communities as I would think Corop would have the greatest impact by free campers, it should be supported as much as possible even when things are a few dollars more. And whining about a free camps showers is a bit rough as the keyword here is FREE. I'm not having a go but I reserve the right to have a say when what is said and what is done is inconsistent.

Re - the Corop store - they let us stay in a fenced yard at the back of the shop, when we had to leave last New Year (2014/15) - supplied us with 1000 litre of beautiful fresh water, we were also invited to attend their New Years Eve party, which was a lot of fun, meeting more locals. Terrific people in there, and a very handy little shop, fuel, gas, alcohol, some groceries, and take away food. OK it might cost a bit more, but add the fuel to the cost of shopping in Rochester (18k) or Shepparton (50k), and it evens out.

If your comment about free showers relates to my post, I was not whining, just making a comment. Yes, Girgarre is free, but most of us that use the facility leave a reasonable amount in the Donation Box. My usual donation is $10.00 for around 2 days, even though the shower room is not to my liking in the winter months.

One of Greens Lakes major functions is that it is part of the Corop Wetlands Wildlife Reserve. Luckily the wildlife seem to live a more harmonious existence than the free campers. peace.gif

Hi Mezzie. The shower we are discussing is at Girgarre, not Greens.

Regards, Ken.
