After 25 years in the ambulance service time to pack it in and have a rest while I still can !
So next Jan. I have a plan, tell me what you think
Fly into Sydney mid Jan ( from the UK ), have a few days there, hire a small hi top camper and off I go heading north, would like to get to York Point but think that's a tad ambitious !
Aim to travel a little bit every few days mainly sticking to the coast all the way up. I also am thinking of missing main cities ie Brisbane and possibly Cairns, just want peace, quiet and a bit of fishing now and then, maybe the occasional surf.
not planning on staying in campsites everyday but will now and then.
I`am planning on being away for three months and am travelling alone.
Welcome here. There are more qualified people on this forum who can tell you more about travelling up the coast from Sydney. You say you are looking at flying into Sydney but you haven't said were you plan to leave from eg. flying back home from up north or returning with the camper to Sydney before flying out. Whatever you do you will enjoy this country of ours. Cheers.

Welcome to the gang Pete, enjoy here and out in the playground.
Nothing wrong with going up the coast. The Pacific and Bruce Highways are both good. Heaps of roadworks and various speed limits to keep you on your toes but no big hold ups. A lot of duel highway/motorway now so is easy.
It is wet season up north until May so is hot and humid. Keep an eye on the weather gods as they could flood parts as well.
I am travelling that way as we speak and enjoying it.
Unless you venture off the highway you don't actually see much coast though.
Keep Safe on the roads.

Hi Doug
Thanks for the welcome.
Well I plan not to venture onto the big roads too much im just going to take my time and see where I end up, hopefully Cooktown and possibly further north if possible
As Gaylehere, and Dougwe have already said welcome to the forum
As I am on the other side of Australia, and have only been where you will travel a handful of times, I will leave it to others to advise what to see
While you are still in the UK, it would pay you to download an App called Wikicamps Australia. It is a cheap (less than a fiver) one off only payment. It gives all the camping, high cost, low cost, and free, sites. It also shows what is on those sites, such as water, toilet, trees for shade, BBQ, tables and benches, etc. When you get closer to leaving your cold weather for a play in our sunshine, you can download it for offline use, which means that when you come over here you will not need to be on the Internet to access it.
Anyway I hope that you have a good holiday

Pete, Have you checked what the weather will be like in northern Queensland in the wet season, they can get a lot of rain at that time of the years and possibility of cyclones. Just my opinion but I would not travel up there at that time of the year.
Thanks for the reply, I have been told it can get pretty wet that time of years up in Queensland so I aim to keep an eye on things really. Is it just the north that suffers from the rains ? And how far north is considered Northern Queensland ??
If you google weather and the name of the town you are think of going to and put in the month you are thinking of travelling you will find sites that tell you what normally happens at that time of year. Median rain for Cooktown in February is 336 mm maximum temp around 31, but the bad one is humidity is 82%. Good luck.
And it's welcome from us two 2
Just remember it's not far on the map of Oz but some times it's still a bloody long way to tippareary, whoops I mean cairns from Sydney enjoy this beute place we call home

Hi everyone, trip had to be put on hold for 12 months due to a best mate having the big C, he was going to join me for a bit on the trip so decided to give it a miss in 2017 just in case he made a recovery, sadly he wont but he still going and has been a bloody inspiration to me and the others around him.
Setting off from a very icy UK on 22nd and heading to Kuala Lumpar for a few days then into Sydney on 27th ( hopefully you will have forgot about the cricket by then but i doubt it !), picking up a van on 29th and heading down to Milton for a few days and turning around and heading north might pop into Sydney again, im reading the grounds café ? in Alexandria might be a place to hang out for a bit then over to the northern beaches and Patonga, after that who knows ! Need to meet my wife in Brisbane early march then on to Cairns. Really looking forward to it as has been a tough year with my mate and all.
Hope to meet some of you guys on the way, would be good to share a beer and not talk about cricket.
Will keep you posted as to how im/we are doing.
See you soon
Pete
