Hi all, just an update on my travels so far. I have stopped at Nyah near Swan hill very nice free camp. stayed a few days then on to Mildura, stayed at Psyche bend pumps free camp no amenities road in not to bad. Went to Mungo np very impressive, road in pretty average then of to Broken hill. stayed at the racecourse. had a good look around, very impressive place went to Silverton pub mad max country, I had lunch there it was a very busy place. I left Broken hill and travelled to Tilpa. I tow a semi off-road retreat van 22 ft. The road from Wilcannia to Tilpa was extremely bad very deep ruts and water on both sides of the road, suffered a bit of damage, but it was good fun. The pub is fantastic, the locals and owners no how to have a good time had a great night. stayed at the weir about 5 ks from the town. the view at this free camp is priceless, the best. the road from Tilpa to Bourke was not as bad as the road in. I am currently at lighting Ridge.
I was on my first big trip on my own in 1978 and I found myself in Tilpa. The pub back then and maybe still is was very small, I was at the bar and this couple walked in and asked for wine, the bar tender said, only sell beer and soft drink. One more thing, it was the last place I bought fuel were the fuel was pumped by hand into the glass on top to measure the amount.
Last time we were at Tilpa was about 1973, in an Austin 1800 sav with a couple of very young kids aboard. :)
It rained and we had to make a rapid escape to avoid being lost forever in the black soil.
Hi Snail and peter n Margaret, things haven't change much, the pub is still very small with names all over the wall and hats hanging in the" lounge"
The only fuel is diesel and is still hand pumped. When I went through it was wet on the verges so you didn't move of the crown. Still a Great aussie pub.
...... . the view at this free camp is priceless, the best. the road from Tilpa to Bourke was not as bad as the road in. I am currently at lighting Ridge.
May the travel gods look after you all.
Freddie
Hi Surf and Turf,
Interesting read. Tar. Do you happen to have any photos of the view from the Tilpa Free Camp. I'd like to have a look if you could post any. Thanks.
