Motor home and caravan door locks.

confuseTry opening your van or motorhome doors with any key.  You may be surprised. We opened our Motorhome, brothers caravan, and mates motorhome with a shed key.  Interestingconfuse....... Locksmiths have other barrels that fit.

Hi Xtrail51. Just tried my van door,  you guessed it opened with wrong key. Sometimes the correct key won't open it, me thinks next time I hook the van up it'll be of to the locksmith.

Cheers Owen.

This is well known. It is a perennial problem. I first struck this with car keys. Back in the 50s and 60s all British cars had a range of keys that totalled around 70 different numbers. At least our vans do not have the key numbers embossed on the barrels. most of the cars I am talking about did have their numbers on the barrel. If your eyes were good enough you could read the numbers from outside. In those days there were the Coles and Woolies variety stores with key cutting services. All you had to do was to quote the number, get a key cut and drive away. A journo from the Truth newspaper demonstrated this and surprised the owner of a Jaguar mark 7.

It's not only the keys from other vans that fit your van. The keys from ARB ute canopies also fit. I inadvertently found my canopy key fits my van.

I suppose that most vanners are not the people who steal from our vans. Those who do the pilfering do not have van keys so I feel reasonably safe.

It wasn't another van key that opened the doors.!!! My concerns are the insurance companies would not look at a claim, probably would say that the van was left unlocked. Think about it.!biggrin Its called mass production!

I suggest you may have some over worn cylinders that are due for replacement. If they are OK then they only open with keys of the  correct code.

I just fitted a keyed night chain latch.

Just an additional deterrent to the light fingered

This thread reminded me of when a good friend of my Dad's came to visit him at his office in Adelaide (mid 1960's) and after a chat and catch up he got in his car and drove off only to realise down the street the upholstery had "changed colour" !! He drove around the block to where he had parked and sure enough there was his car, right where he had left it. Parked the other car back in it's spot and got into his and drove away. Both cars were white Morris 1100's. We all had a good laugh when we found out.

Regards,
