In March this year I passed them just out of Charters Towers on the western approach to town and they had a van on the portable scales still attached to the tow vehicle.
I got waved through as there were 5 already lined up to be checked and not enough room for me, I kind of would have liked to see what my weight was to them.
I know I wasn't over as I did all weights before we left home (See Dougwe post in Techies)

Has anyone been required to be weighed by Road Authorities on their travels?
If so, is the van connected to the tug when weighed (either weighbridge or portable scales)?
What weight(s) are the Authority determining?
Hi, sticking my neck out on here, from my past 45 years experience in road transport with transport inspectors when summoned to be weighed they will only your vehicle as a combination the same way it was travelling apron the said road before weighing by a certified weighing inspector.
I repeat they will not allow any part of your load to be removed from the vehicle before weighing they may allow you to stand outside the vehicle but passengers, dogs, cats stay in the vehicle.
Mostly the gross combination weight then they will if you over the gross weight on the vehicle compliance plate will consider weighing each axle separate to gain more evidence for a total conviction.
If you are over weight at one group of axles, they may ask you to adjust before moving, if you are totally over your limits they may just ground the lot.
On the lighter side of things, if you are there more then a couple of minutes throw yourself on the bonnet, legs spread eagle singing out "I give up".
Hope this helps

And IF hes in a bad mood.
They can even check Each wheel assy weight against tyre ratings.
and do you for that if over tyre load limits.
Off the scales they do wheel loads then combine for max.
So can do you Wheel loading (Side to side on same axle).
Axle loading. Drawbar loading. drawbar within height limits.
combined load max. and each vehicle loads.
Both combined and unhitched.
So DON'T piss him off.
Yes sir. No sir. you want a cup of tea sir...
while thinking what you like.
