I agree with strop, and I also refuse to use them, for the same reason
I have noticed in some smaller regional towns, that a new supermarket will keep the prices low, until the local corner shop has been forced to close, and then gradually increase the price
I read somewhere recently that Bunnings, (err, perhaps a bit tongue in cheek here), the supermarket made for the men
They are thinking of removing their self service checkouts, due to lack of use
Self serve checkouts are a good device for stealing ,it's costing the big supermarkets a fortune, and I guess people like us the honest shoppers are paying for it, as Aldi does not have do it yourself checkouts , it can only add to there bottom line...
Aldi checkouts. If they ever decide to change, someone needs to tell me because I won't go back. Don't like their lack of range and too much poor quality no-known name brand stuff.

Having just returned from our Wildflower Tour of the Central Wheatbelt area of W.A. I must say that we were shocked st some prices and quality of food items found in some remote stores,
One small town in particular, sitting around 250 km North of perth, was a fine example of what they had for sale was it, either pay the price or go with-out,
I purchased a pkt of crumbed steak , which cost very near to $10.00 per pk for around 1/4 kg, it wasn't until I returned to the car that I noticed the best by date ......had expired FOUR MONTHS AGO,
I returned to the shop, pointing out the expiry date on the package and asked for some in-date meat, The Bird behind the counter had a look on her face of about 5% interest and told me that there was no new meat and all that was in the freezer was the same age !!!
I got my money back and left that town to decay into the dust like many have already done.

I prefer to go through a checkout with a person working it BUT only last Wednesday I was in a large chain supermarket around 11.00am and only the self serve were open, nothing else. This has happened before as well so I am not going without so go through self serve.

What I notice most with supermarkets with self service checkouts is they will have one or two manned checkouts open with long queues but will not man another to ease the backlog hoping you will use the self serve. Other chains particularly IGA monitor the queues at checkouts and quickly open others if required. This was once called customer service, but seems to be unimportant in the pursuit of profit to the big two. By way of protest if I am forced to wait in long queues at a check out whilst one or two staff are instructing at the self serves I ask for another checkout to be opened. If they don't I will leave my trollrey where it is and walk out of the store. You can always buy supplies at another place
My approach to supermarkets and their ideology is simple. I vote with my feet. I never use self service,I rarely use a trolley. If the lines are long or slow,if only one or two are open I put my goods done and walk out.
Interesting report on TV news Friday night that people cheating at self-serve checkouts were costing the big chains about $4 BILLION a year. They mis-record goods (say, mangoes as apples). Some just walk through without paying. Had to laugh. Easy fix: open more checkouts with people on the till. Be a lot cheaper! I refuse point blank to use the silly bloody things.
Cheers, Tony

Getting back to the thread's title, what annoys me the most is people with a trolley packed to the gunwales using an express (12 to 15 items) checkout - and the staff say nothing or tell them to go to another checkout. As for self-serve checkouts, I generally avoid them as well - can't help thinking the person(s) assisting the self-servers would be better utilised by operating an extra checkout.

From the other side my wife works for Woolies and what she really hates is finding packaging left on shelves either empty or have been sampled (eaten). It is also really annoying for her to continually find cold goods such as meat, frozen stuff or products from the deli that have been dumped somewhere because someone has changed their mind. May sound like no big deal but the volume of these type of losses would shock you and as Ron-D pointed out its not only costing the supermarkets it's the rest of us who also end up paying for it. I don't know what other supermarkets do but in my wife's store where they do have self serve checkouts and probably a dozen or more normal checkouts the front end supervisor will call people doing other tasks to open up or may even jump on a register herself when people are starting to back up.

My solution to self serve checkout is to scan my wollies card in coles (or visa versa).
It requires a complete reboot of the till to fix therefore having staff gainfully employed.
Do do it if you are in a hurry.

In my day this was referred to as vandalism, you must be very proud of yourself.
"Vandalism is "action involving deliberate destruction of or damage to public or private property"

I am not allowed to go shopping with my wife cause I make comments about things I find annoying like trollys left in the middle of the Isle and not enough check out people to serve customers and I hate self serve they do cost jobs.

A waste of peoples valuable time I reckon!!!
Aussie Paul.
At least the manager has to come and see for himself whilst he is fixing things. The best way I have found to talk directly to the manager.
Lack of reasonable quality fruit and vege. As a gluten intolerant vegetarian, fruit and veg is my life!! Some of the rubble in there is woeful.
Kiwijims...I reckon that must have been mullewa? I went there earlier this year after being in the bush a long time and was horrified. Well stocked in noodles and crap I wouldn't eat - but the veges ð® - the lettuce I had in my fridge I was going to replace was better than what they were selling. Shame - people in the area obviously patronise Geraldton for cheapness.

I would suggest if you have specific health or self imposed dietary requirements you stay within striking distance of major towns and cities.
For obvious reasons fresh produce is not easy to come by in the outback.
Self Serve is my major dislike - simply let tham know I won't use them (unless they pay ME), then leave the trolley and walk out! they then need to put everything back on the shelf. My local Big W now lets me be served at the returns counter. Have you also noticed that the aisles seem to be getting narrower as well? Some you struggle to pass another trolley.

I'm trying to understand the mindset of people who take the trouble to complete their shopping, then throw a temper tantrum, abandon the trolley, and walk out when things don't go the way they think they should.
Then of course they have to repeat the process at another store strange logic to me.
Woolman, if your answer to this is to knowingly vandalise a checkout as a personal protest then I suggest that you shop somewhere that doesn't have them. I have been in supermarkets in many places including the US, Southern Africa, NZ, Argentina and France and guess what this technology is not just a Coles or Woolies conspiracy. If you think that by people boycotting self serve checkouts it is going to somehow force supermarket chains to employee more staff you really are living in the past - it won't happen. By the way do people who boycott self serve checkouts at supermarkets also do the same at self serve petrol bowsers, cash card machines, refuse to use plastic money, don't use email because it's costing post office staff their jobs etc. etc. - lets be consistent here ?
If you don't have the computer literacy or skill to use one you still have the choice of going through a normal checkout.
I don't mind standing around waiting for my turn at the checkout. I'm not in any hurry, the mobile scenery is often worthwhile, screaming kids can be an irritant until you put yourself in the parents shoes. Is every one in a big hurry to get home ant watch the soaps on TV. If you are travelling you can glean a wealth of information from the locals. Read the local notice boards, heaps of free information on them. If it is too much of a problem, pick up some araldite and harden up a bit. Life's too short to bitch about the checkout queues.
rgren2....my attitude as well.
My only gripe with supermarkets is the way inconsiderate customers just discard their trolley in a parking bay instead of walking a few metres to the trolley bay.

My mindset is if they are not told something is not acceptable then they will keep using them. It is not a temper tantrum - it is a a discussion asking them to open a manned till, or pay me for MY time while doing their job!. I will not be forced into something I disagree with and won't work for nothing. There is one supermarket in Perth that ONLY has self checkouts. By leaving the trolley they have seen I will not be coerced into 'their' methods - and they still need to employ someone to restock the shelves.
