Water Filters

Hi All,

As we are intending to do a fair bit of free camping I thought I'd get some advice on water filtration.

My question is, How good are these BEST filters? Can I put reasonable quality river water, say Murray, through them and safely drink?

The salesman says Yes, but I would prefer unbiased opinion.

Thx Vince

With water such as you suggest I would certainly have some pre filtration before the BEST. In answer to your question,YES,but your filter would have a much shortened life span.

It's just a personal opinion, but good quality drinking water is a priority with us, filtered river water maybe ok its your body and what you put into it is up to you,To me water quality is very important so no river water for us why risk it ..

Bottled drinking water from Aldi or bottled water from home . We have filtered drinking water from main tank for kettle . We don't generally drink straight water via a creek ., Too many idiots bumping stupid things these days ., It's not bugs ! It's the chemicals etc . Pear cider is my fave water at present . No drinky and drive with heavy RV !! Or any vehicle !!

Water authorities use filtering and chemical treatments such as chlorine along with extensive testing before supplying drinking water to the public. Taking water from sources such as a river and just relying on a filter in my opinion is taking a risk with your health. When we lived in Mozambique we used to take the water from our tap in the house boil it, put it through a company supplied ceramic drip filter then only use it for washing up, cleaning your teeth etc. (we would buy bottled water to drink). I'm not suggesting that you need to go to those extremes in this country but do you really know especially in places like here in the Hunter what chemicals or by products are being fed into the river catchments from industries such as agriculture & mining. We have opted for an inline filter in our van but I intend to fill our tanks from town water supplies.

We have a solids filter at Inlet to tanks. with a double kitchen filter under sink from Drinking tank.
with Just a single in line from inside inlet tap to sink for kettle etc

Also as others.
20 ltr shop water for drinking from glass.
Unfortunately, nowadays. You never know.

We fill our MH water tank from our home tap here in Sydney via a B.E.S.T inline filter. We use that water only when we cannot obtain water from the caravan park hookup that also is filtered by the B.E.S.T filter. All drinking water is bottled water from whatever supermarket. Using that simple formula we never have an issue.

I think this came up a few weeks ago. I don't know much about those filters but myself, I use dual filters at 1 micron (fibre/paper 1st then carbon block second). Then I filter down to .5 mc for the 'drinking water' - which I then distill. I can distill any form of water and it comes out pretty much the same quality.
You have to be careful of water into van (lines and appliances) - I've already replaced one check valve last year with it being filtered down to 1mc at all times. But I'm generally a northern bush kind of dweller too.

HI Grubbygypsy,
I would be very keen to know what you use to distill water, you cant go wrong with distillation but how do you do it on the road?

Hi vince
I use a distiller - an air still kind of thing. You can do alcohol in them too .
I have a generator so as I mainly free camp I throw that on when needed, it does 4lt at a time. Or if I ever go to a caravan park I am madly distilling the entire 20'hours or so I'm there.
I got my distiller from juicers Australia I think they're called. There are a few different sorts (alcohol only ones generally have lower wattage elements). Mine has all SS components as I didn't want the (hot) water then touching plastics.
I can pretty much distill anything....creek, bore etc....and it all comes out tasting the same and 99.9% free of germs, chemicals and pesticides or whatever else they feel fit to poison us with.
Power is your enemy. You have to be able to power it of course.

I always used to carry the water calorifier? Tablets we got from the army packs.
You could put a couple into any water virtually.
leave for 1\2 hr and safely drink.

But. You got a stove of any sort.
Just run the water through solids filter first,
Boil for a while then cool.

Taste never killed anybody.
We've distilled water in floating tubes at sea, Practicing. It works.
and branches in a hole with clear plastic over also.
Just small amounts the problem.

And the marine Desal.units (AC better than DC)
. I've seen a bloke piss into it. and drink at the other end.
NO taste and safe as.

It's a mental thing..

we used to try all sorts on the yachts.
were at sea for a long time sometimes. and covering all possibilities.

I briefly looked into RO but my initial findings were that they take 4 litres to make 1 litre. Not an option for where I usually hang, so probably not an option for most people who travel away from major centres I'd say. Fine for a submarine (but I do wonder about the changing state of the ocean...but they haven't bothered to think that one through).
