Metal detecting in SA and Victoria Goldfields

Hi All

New here... but would like to make a trip of 2-3 weeks to the Victorian Goldfields when things dry out. This is not for the person who wants all the modern amenities though caravan parks can be used for relief. Mostly no toilets or showers. Live in Adelaide.

Hello Retiredatlast

May I be one of the first to welcome you to the forum

I can only wish you luck and hope that you find the next Golden Eagle

Unfortunately I can not give any info on gold detecting, as I got the gold lust out of my system as a 18 year old, in the Kalgoorlie region

G'day Retiredatlast, and welcome to the Forum. Lots of great people and advice here. You are lucky in that you have beaten me to retirement by several years :)

Hi Thanks All for the response.

Hey Tony

Maybe that was Hay Street.

Spent time U/G mining for 17 years in 9 or 10 mines in OZ. Had 3 very close escapes from major rock falls...Nickel Mines you need your running shoes, hard hat, always look up and lots of luck...to stay alive. Stay on the surface nowadays.

Kambalda Nickel Mine, Redross Nickel Mine and Central Norsman Gold mine in W.A. Now that goes back awhile doesn't it ?

And Doug....losing all my feathers from the chrome top that is getting larger ! Will be able to use it as a mirror in the bush next year to signal search aircraft

And CAD at least you are honest ! I have met real CADS before. Bet your not like them. Perhaps you are a minor cad.

Had a few Major and Minor Operations (lost count) to keep me going though to reach this far. Last one 9 days ago...dunno what the next Op will be.

Good to see you have a sense of humour

Yes back in the day, all the Gold and Nickel Mines were underground, the open pits came much later

To quote a Kalgoorlie police detective to an overseas reporter, when asked what he was going to do about Hay Street

He said that as he had only been stationed in the region for two years, he had never been to Hay Street
Or words to that effect

The police station was in Brookman Street, which was a continuation of Hay Street, so he was not exactly fibbing, just being a bit economical with the truth

If you have recently had an op, then keep smiling, and keep that stress away, while you are metal detecting, and once again I hope that you have an enjoyable trip

Hey Doug

That is not so silly either for a solar panel. As technology gets better you will be able to stick a super skinny panel on a chrome top and charge your phone or your hearing aid when in the bush. Dual purpose. Or anything else too.... to keep the wife happy!

And Cad, Tony and Doug if you polish the chrome top before going bush you will have more success in being found by the search aircraft in the bush ! That is the secret. You must use a good quality polish. Do not use car paint cutting polish in case you scratch your memory bank.
