Waterproofing underside of caravan floor

putting this up as a discussion point after a conversation with a friend who is thinking about doing it.

the caravan is about 9 years old and in  fairly good condition. He is a little concerned that the underside of the

floor may be showing signs of wear. He is considering painting the under of the floor with a tar based paint

to seal it from any ingress of water.

therefore I would ask for your comments on this topic as there maybe others who are interested in this topic.

i will also put it up on the general section as well

thank you

briche

I just use a standard "Exterior" oil based paint   of good quality.   Sort you would use for painting a house  or fence say.   Painted it about 4 times now over the years.  Always seems to be in good nick each time I am under there.  We take our Avan off the bitumen "Lots"

As said in other post
Bitumin/tar based will give better sealing.protection.Chassis rails too.
Same price just messier.

I actually gave quick coat of turps first with this van. Helps it to soak in.

But I got my old Vibrator sprayer to work again.
No good with heavy though. clogs the nozzle.

PS Mike.
Serious OFF Bitumin, lotsa corrugations.
strips the Galv off your chassis and drawbar.
House paint wouldn't last one trip.

The floors (normally) have a coating on from factory.
but it wears.

After that you want something that soaks into the ply.
Anything sitting on top will just be blasted off and not seal.
That's why the wheel arch sealer is so good.

If a person can find a proper bitumin/tar base sealer
rather than the chemical ones
It'd be better again.

Never had a problem with losing paint off the underside   It's been intact every time I've washed the underside and re painted.

I painted it  again after 2 years August Last .  With good quality Exterior oil based paint.

It's travelled many a thousand Klm's on the dirt in those two years as well.   GCR, Gibb River, Strzelecki, Oodnadatta, Goldfields Hwy, Buchanan, Mt Augusta, Kennedy Range, Millstream, and quite a few others.

They use a bitumen based paint to the underside of timber floor on a passenger bus, and they travel many hundreds of thousands of kilometres.
