Give your local aircon installer a call and talk to them would be the best way.

The indoor unit of a wall split was designed for wall mounting and cannot be located on the ceiling, mainly because of the water drain pan under the coil, however, you may find a floor standing indoor unit could be mounted horizontal (if the drain pan allows).

The ceiling cassette indoor unit was designed for horizontal (ceiling) mounting.

There are a LOT of mobiles nowadays with Split AC Aircond's.
They several generations of technology up on the so called "Air conditioners"
they charge a zillion $$$'s to install in vans etc..
and are never any good. Specially on the heating side.

A lot use LG.
I've installed a couple with mates. using the end ceiling cupboards fronts
Then get plumbers to couple up and get ticket.
single beds fine for that. but doubles tend to get a bit cold
with the cold dropping down onto it.
Go on YouTube and ask. there'd be lots of examples there I'd think.
WITH install demo's.

Maybe not quite what your asking for but our solution for the rooftop rattler that we pulled out, replaced with a Maxxair fan.

Mounted a flat panel at the rear between the cupboards supported by a roof brace as the roof is curved, sealed the underneath after the plumbing/wiring/double drains were completed.

Second Coaster motorhome that we have put a split unit into & loved them both. Just remember to fit 2 drains, one either side as your not always parked dead level.

Bonus is this Daikin can be run on the inverter/battery's overnight, even in the very hot-humid tropics so no generator required.Aircon mount.jpgHead unit.jpg

Hey you motorhome blokes.
I'm looking at a Mercedes 31 seater. 3.2 Diesel
FIBREGLASS body shell Full service record.
He's owned, maintained, and driven from new 290k on clock
Local small bus co. Bloody immaculate.
He's 80 yr old and retiring. has 3 Toyota's and a Mitzi.

Reckons the Mitzi was best, reliability wise. after the Merc.
Then the Toyota's. Unless they had the older inline 6 pot mechanical diesel in there.
Had a Mazda but didn't keep it long. They don't like the hills much he said.

Asking 15k for the Merc. with seats and full split Ducted airconds
Is that a fair price..

We have an inverter split system, compressor mounted rear bumper, condenser above beds at front of van (single beds). Works really well both heating and cooling. Can run it with our Honda generator as well as 240V.
Cheers

How well does the air blowing down over the foot end of the bed work for sleeping? I only ask as we have a similar unit mounted above the bed in our big bus project but as yet unused for cooling while sleeping and we were considering the need for a second fan to blow the air back across the bed from the foot up so the upper body got some cool air as well. If this method works well as it is it will save me the problems of wiring in additional fans at roof level

The condenser unit is at the head of our beds. We have a door that closes off the front half of the van to keep the cool air in the bedroom. We operate the system on "silent" mode at night and it cools the room (or heats it) with very little noise. The outlet of the condenser unit can be set to oscillate up and down. We have no need for additional fans, even when we leave the dividing door open.
Hope that helps,

C00P

G'day Terry

2 black Camfaro fans fitted under the cupboards on either side take care of air movement around the body core if needed, flap on the head unit is set level or your feet freeze. We wanted fans anyway as neither of us can sleep without a fan running even in cold southern states, consequence of living in the tropics for so long as our fans at home only get turned off to be cleaned.

When in central Aus & the temps were mid forties outside i did have the vents turning & the cool breeze blowing directly onto us as we slept, we just park facing up hill & move the pillows to the other end of the bed as they are in the photo. We use the aircon in the NT mainly to reduce humidity with the temp set at 25-26 degrees.

Our last Coaster had a similar set up (Fujitsu) that was reverse cycle but did not have the inverter power to run it, had to be plugged in somewhere. It was originally mounted in the cab area but we soon realised the wind just didn't get the the sleeping area so a rethink & re position was in order. This unit is cooling only & can run comfortably on battery's for 10-12 hours, also we added a diesel heater as i wanted to keep the weight down, reverse cycle was another 14kg hanging off the back.

Thanks COOP and Doo Crew, it wasn't really possible for us to put the head unit at the foot of the bed as the cupboard would cut off the airflow if mounted on the wall and it wouldn't have really been an option to mount on the front of the cupboard, so the wall above the bed was the only option.
The gimbal type fans were the plan mounted so they would blow over either side of the bed so it looks like I still have to do that bit after all, never mind, it does make the air stream variable for each side of the bed so I don't have to suffer the way SWMBO wants the air flow set.... well there is hope that is the way it will turn out anyway

Things we do to keep travelling so all are happy  A happy wife means a happy life, we'd probably be happy in the back of a station wagon cooking on an open fire, but we would most definitely be doing it by ourselves smile

You might be restricted to the more expensive and less efficient Dometic inverter unit Officer Dibble. Apply that cost to the roof mounted cassette inside unit and the cost might not be so over the top after all.

Remember, a happy wife is happy life.... and remember the look you got when I said the battery wouldn't work like that and then again when the smoke came of the inverter? Can you really afford not to fit the roof top cassette.... what if Della isn't happy disbelief confuse biggrin

Those caskets are dear a $3000 + I think I can get a wall unit at the foot of the bed and I mean under it if I could find one thin enough I'd put it over the windows in the bed area . I have to do something the old clunker sucks power a fair bit because of were we are parked .

Doing my best at thinking about it lol

Do you have any space spare UNDER the floor.  I saw a van not so long ago that had an underfloor condenser.  It blew upwards of course & had a mat over it when it was not in use.

Here is another option https://www.truma.com/int/en/air-conditioning/saphir-vario.php

You can get ceiling cassette systems now as well, would fit (or go close to fitting) a normal roof vent.
Connect up to a inverter unit it would be ideal.
Like this perhaps? www.fujitsugeneral.com.au/docs/default-source/Brochures/fujitsu-multi-split-brochure_web.pdf

I hope to do a system with 2 cassettes on the one inverter unit in the not too distant future.

Check google, Mitsubishi Electric (different to Mitsubishi) do one as well, and I have had a good run with that bramd so far.

Cheers,

Hi COOP,

I saw your post re your Split System. Can you give me a run down of your set up please. I am getting a Slit fitted now and was interested in your battery set up that you run it off grid on. Thanks, Greg

From my research and experience, Mitsubishi Heavy  Industries equipment is infinitely superior to Mitsubishi Electric.I run a 2.5kw MHI split system solely with Solar Panels and batteries...Safe and happy travels to all.Cheers.
