Caravan Camera

I am currently in the process of setting up the monitor for the  new van's rear camera. The auto electrician has told me that the cable will protrude from the driver side windscreen pillar so that the monitor can be connected and mounted by suction cap to the windscreen. This seems to me that it is going to be pretty unsightly with  a cable laying on the dash when the monitor is not connected. Has anyone got any advise or experience on maybe a better option than this one. I was thinking maybe I could use an unused blank that I have on the dash near my brake controller or even ending it in the dicky box with enough cable to sit the monitor on the console when it's being used. I have a Pajero Sport but I looked at the brother in law's Navara yesterday and he had the cable protruding from his pillar - his solution was to just cover it with a dash mat.

The other way to cover the unsightly cable is to leave the monitor ion place. Get another camera, mount it on the rear of the tug and use it as a reversing mirrorWhen you hitch up, unplug the reversing camera and plug the vans on in in its place.

 hi Belmont Bear.

Just last week we went though this excercise, there were lots of options, being a reasonable tight person with money looked around for information until I found a balance.

Now have a replacement mirror/monitor

camera over the number plate, Driver can see the towball when attach to car and how close to other things at rear. works only in reverse without van.

camera on caravan, when hooked up to car this camera runs full time, just great can see with in a short distant of rear of van and back down the road a piece.

I was heading for a new radio with a monitor but was shown this replacement mirror and said great t a third of the price of the radio and is fully wire in, no one can see anything unusual inside car, all the products are by Mongroose.

Did about 4 hours touring with the van on so far, working a treat, did 2 hook ups, not quiet game yet to use only the camera, I still get out to check. Parking at shopping centres is very good.

Thanks Peter and Radar for the info. the problem I have is that the Safety Dave System they gave me came with the van which is already wired up ready to go. The vehicle has it's own inbuilt camera above the tow ball which is part of Mitsubishi's own in car infotainment  - this comes on as soon as reverse has been selected. The Safety Dave monitor has input for 2 cameras, it's a pity that the cars own system doesn't. I will talk to the auto electrician before he starts working on it tomorrow and if we can't come up with a better solution than a cable sticking out of the windscreen pillar I might just give it a miss and not worry about using the camera on the van at all (save myself $280 for the installation).

You wont know your self when you have the camera on the back of the van. Great for reversing into tight spaces as the Safety Dave unit has a microphone and the dash unit has speakers so you can hear what the other half is saying to you. Also great to see what is coming up behind you, or behind you that you did not see coming. I would never buy another Tug and van with out cameras. Love the Safety Dave gear.

Just a thought can you intercept the existing camera input to the dash monitor / radio / infotainment and put a switch in to select the existing camera or the aftermarket camera on the van

Thanks Woody that would be an excellent solution I'll ask the auto electrician today if it's possible. The only concern could be a warranty issue with Mitsubishi if I modified their fitted unit. CC I assume that your question about the lens was directed towards Radar.

Guys some feedback on the installation - I went to the auto electrician today and discussed all the ideas and suggestions including using a spare switch blank which I thought was in a perfect position. Breaking into the cars own system and using the existing rear camera feed etc. etc. at the end of the day due to problems with each different option I decided reluctantly to go with the normal setup i.e. the cable protruding about 100mm from the front pillar. To my surprise when I picked up the car and handed over my $413 it didn't look too bad at all. This price included $139 for the heavy duty Safety Dave curly cord which really neatened up the back end. This guy is the authorised Safety Dave installer for this area so he knew what he was doing.
