Gibb River Road

Hello every body, I hope this is in the correct place, if not I apologise and hope the administrators can help by correcting my mistake.

My Partner (Vicki) and myself are planning a trip along the Gibb River road in April or May in 2017 from south to north and we are looking for at least one more couple to accompany us in their own transport and caravan.

I am an experienced caravaner and can fix most things on a vehicle and caravan, even if just jury rigged to get to the next place where it can be repaired properly.

Our rig is a Land cruiser 200 series with a crusader Xcountry OFF road caravan.

We are both in good health and mobile and in the late 60's, we live in Perth so this message may only pertain to Perth residents but I am not discounting people from other states.

The main criteria we are looking for in someone who will accompany us is that they MUST be social and easy to get on with and reasonably healthy.

The exact date is not set in concrete, but we would not want to rush this trip there is much to see perhaps 4 - 6 weeks give or take.

My contact details are 0418689581 and bill-sutherland@bigpond.com please get in touch

It would be nice to catch up socially somewhere so that you can see that we are normal people. (whatever normal is)

Best regards Banglabill

Hi Bill,

While we aren't intending to drive the GRR again, we did go that way (north to south) in September of this year. The road was corrugated for much of the distance, but that was expected. It was not as bad as the Tanami Road - we only went to Wolfe Creek Crater and back.

Fuel at the Mt Barnett Roadhouse was $2.05 per litre when we came through - Broome was $1.359 at the time (IIRC Derby was comparable to Broome but I don't have any figures from there).

A couple of places that are a must see along the GRR are...

  • Windjana Gorge - has a DEC run campground with hot showers and water. Make sure to walk down the gorge at sundown and take a torch for the trip back. It's well worth the spectacle of the fruit bats scooping up water as they fly through.
  • Tunnel Creek - stay camped at Winjana Gorge. Take a torch and look out for crocs (freshies) on sand banks inside the tunnel
  • Silent Grove - also has a DEC run campground with water and hot showers. A day trip to Bell Gorge with swim togs is good if you want
  • Ellenbrae Station for scones and coffee (is a nice stop).

Both DEC campgrounds were about $12 day (concession). Lots of other places to stop at but I can't comment on them -  I had a bad water leak on the caravan at Mt Barnett so we kept going to Silent Grove.

Hi Wayne,
Thank you for the tips, it is always good to get advice from someone who has done the journey, we will certainly take your advice and stop at the places you mentioned
Best regards Banglabill

Hi Bill - We (John & I) plan to do the GRR south to north in May next year. So far we've booked the overnight trip to the Horizontal Falls from Derby on Sat 13 May. We plan to leave Perth (northern suburbs) early May so that we get 3 or 4 days in Broome before Derby. The day after doing Horizontal Falls we intend hitting the GRR. Our rig is a Nissan Navara Diesel Ute with a Wedgetail slide-on camper. Our idea at present is to take 10-12 days to do the GRR, visit our Perth neighbours who will be in Kununurra from late May, for a few days then make our way back to Perth via Wolfe Creek & the Pilbara (Karajini, etc.). We expect 5 weeks in total.

Happy to make contact via a PM or your email/phone to discuss further as we are sociable types too and like the idea of company on such an iconic and potentially intrepid drive biggrin

cheers, Kay

Hi Kay,

Thank you for the reply, my email address and phone number are on the original post, but here it is again bill-sutherland@bigpond.com 0418689581

I was unaware that you had to book so far ahead to do the trip to the horizontal falls, where do you stay overnight ? and what does it cost. sorry for being so nosy.

It would be nice to meet up socially somewhere, say early in the new year, however we are out of the country for a week from 13th of Jan we will be in Thailand for a wedding.

We live in Dawesville but we can travel to a mutually agreed place for a drink.

Our plan was to continue on to Darwin then over to Queensland, we have done approx 40,000k this year just travelling with the van, and we have still got itchy feet.

I look forward to hearing from you soon. Please PM me.

Best regards Bill and Vicki

Hi Kay

I have no idea what is going on with my PC because I cannot find any of your emails

I believe that we should get together with our respective partners and have a drink somewhere that is good for both parties to discuss the Gibb river road.

My email is bill-sutherland@bigpond.com and my number is 0418689581

looking forward to hearing from you

Best regards Bill and Vicki
